Public education takes many forms at JCAS.
Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a life-saving
skill that can be learned by all persons, regardless of age or education.
CPR is a valuable skill and you never know when you will need it.
CPR
is used when a persons heart stops beating and they are not breathing. In essence, the
rescuer becomes a manual life support system, by pumping blood throughout the victims body
and breathing for them. Compressing the chest creates pressure changes and squeezes the
heart between the chest and the spinal column, pushing blood throughout the body. Oxygen
is moved in and out of the lungs by mouth-to-mouth ventilations. Oxygenated blood is what
keeps the brain and other vital organs alive.
New adaptations of CPR include the mention and
demonstration of barrier devices, such as face masks or gloves in order to protect the
potential rescuer from diseases, such as
HIV, Hepatitis, or Terburclelosis .
