PROCLAMATION 10-30-08-01
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH
OCTOBER, 2008
Whereas, home should be a place of warmth, unconditional love, tranquility and security, and for most of us, home and family can indeed be counted among our greatest blessings. Tragically, for many Americans, these are blessings that are tarnished by violence and fear; and
Whereas, domestic violence is more than the occasional family dispute. The Domestic Violence Intervention Program in Johnson County provided safe shelter to 398 women and children, served in total 1918 women, men and children, and answered more than 18,000 Crisis Line calls last year; and
Whereas, despite significant progress in providing rights and services to crime victims over the past two decades, large segments of our population, including crime victims who are elderly, young, disabled or living in rural areas, are still underserved; and
Whereas, a coalition of organizations has emerged to directly confront this crisis. Law enforcement officials, those involved with shelters and hotline services, health care providers, the clergy and other concerned citizens are helping in the effort to end domestic violence. We must recognize the compassion and dedication of these volunteers and professionals, applaud their efforts and increase public understanding of the difficult problem;
Now, Therefore, be it Resolved that we, the Johnson County Board of Supervisors do join governments across the country to proclaim the month of October, 2008 as:
Domestic Violence Awareness Month
and urge all citizens to recognize this month by becoming aware of the tragedy of domestic violence, supporting victims and those who are working toward its end; and
Be it Further Resolved, that the Elected Officials of the Johnson County Board of Supervisors reaffirms a commitment to respect and enforce victims’ rights and address their needs throughout 2009.
