MINUTES OF THE FORMAL MEETING OF THE JOHNSON COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS:

SEPTEMBER 3, 2009

 

      Chairperson Neuzil called the Johnson County Board of Supervisors to order in the Johnson County Health and Human Services Building at 9:02 a.m.  Members present were: Larry Meyers, Terrence Neuzil, Sally Stutsman, and Rod Sullivan; absent: Pat Harney.

 

      Unless otherwise noted, all actions were taken by the following vote: Roll call: aye: Stutsman, Neuzil, Sullivan, Meyers; absent: Harney. 

 

PROCLAMATION 09-03-09-01

FAMILY DAY PROCLAMATION

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2009

 

      Whereas, the use of illegal and prescription drugs and the abuse of alcohol and nicotine constitute the greatest threats to the well-being of America's children; and

 

      Whereas, 14 years of surveys conducted by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University have consistently found that the more often children and teenagers eat dinner with their families the less likely they are to smoke, drink and use illegal drugs; and

 

      Whereas, frequent family dining is associated with lower rates of teen smoking, drinking, illegal drug use and prescription drug abuse; and

 

      Whereas, the correlation between frequent family dinners and reduced risk for teen substance abuse is well documented; and

 

      Whereas, parents who are engaged in their children’s lives – through such activities as frequent family dinners – are less likely to have children who abuse substances; and

 

      Whereas, family dinners have long constituted a substantial pillar of family life in America; and

 

      Now, therefore, be it resolved that we, the Johnson County Board of Supervisors, do hereby proclaim Monday, September 28, 2009 as

 

Family Day – A Day to Eat Dinner With Your Children

 

and urge all citizens to recognize and participate in its observance.

 

      Motion by Sullivan, second by Stutsman, to approve Proclamation 09-03-09-01.

 

      Motion by Stutsman, second by Sullivan, to approve the claims on the Auditor’s Claim Register, as approved by a majority of the Supervisors.

 

      Motion by Sullivan second by Meyers, to approve the minutes of the formal meeting of August 27, 2009. 

 

      Motion by Stutsman, second by Meyers, to approve the payroll authorizations submitted by department heads, as approved by a majority of the Supervisors.

 

      Motion by Stutsman, second by Sullivan, to approve the requested tax suspension for parcel 1011263005 located at 1020 Rochester Avenue, Iowa City, Iowa.

 

      Motion by Stutsman, second by Sullivan, to approve and authorize the Chairperson to sign a letter of support for the Coralville/North Liberty joint Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant application to the U.S. Department of Transportation for the Highway 965 project.

 

      Motion by Stutsman, second by Meyers, to deny the requested tax abatement for parcel #1004452003 at 717 Eastmoor Drive, Iowa City, Iowa.
