MINUTES OF THE CANVASS OF THE JOHNSON COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS:

NOVEMBER 10, 1997

Chairperson Stutsman called to order the Johnson County Board of Supervisors at 9:06 a.m. to act as a canvass board to certify the results of the city elections of November 4, 1997. Present were Joseph Bolkcom, Jonathan Jordahl, Sally Stutsman, and Charles Duffy; absent: Stephen Lacina.

ABSTRACT OF VOTES

FOR THE OFFICE OF Coralville City Mayor there were nine hundred seventy-seven (977) votes cast as follows: Jim L. Fausett received nine hundred eighteen (918) votes and Scattering received fifty-nine (59) votes.

We therefore declare Jim L. Fausett duly elected to the office of Mayor, for the term of 2 years.

FOR THE OFFICE OF Coralville City Council Member - Four Year Term (THREE to be elected) there were two thousand eight hundred eighty-two (2,882) votes cast as follows: Jackie Dion Bruce received two hundred sixty-three (263) votes, Henry C. Herwig received seven hundred twenty-eight (728) votes, Dave Jacoby received five hundred eighty-seven (587) votes, Diana Lundell received seven hundred seventy-one (771) votes, Bob Walker received five hundred twenty-one (521) votes, and Scattering received twelve (12) votes.

We therefore declare Henry C. Herwig, Dave Jacoby and Diana Lundell duly elected to the offices of Council Member, for the term of 4 years.

FOR THE OFFICE OF Coralville City Council Member - To Fill a Vacancy (ONE to be elected) there were one thousand twenty-one (1,021) votes cast as follows: Kent D. Bortell received two hundred eighty-three (283) votes, John Weihe received seven hundred thirty-five (735) votes, and Scattering received three (3) votes.

We therefore declare John Weihe duly elected to the office of Council Member, for the remaining 26 month vacant term.

FOR THE OFFICE OF Hills City Mayor there were fifty-one (51) votes cast as follows: Cathy Fitzmaurice received forty-eight (48) votes and Scattering received three (3) votes.

We therefore declare Cathy Fitzmaurice duly elected to the office of Mayor, for the term of 2 years.

FOR THE OFFICE OF Hills City Council Member - Four Year Term (TWO to be elected) there were seventy-eight (78) votes cast as follows: Leslie L. Livingston received thirty-five (35) votes, Matt Kopecky received forty (40) votes and Scattering received three (3) votes.

We therefore declare Leslie L. Livingston and Matt Kopecky duly elected to the offices of Council Member, for the term of 4 years.

FOR THE OFFICE OF Hills City Council Member - To Fill a Vacancy (ONE to be elected) there were fifty (50) votes cast as follows: Keith Stevens received forty-nine (49) votes and Scattering received one (1) vote.

We therefore declare Keith Stevens duly elected to the office of Council Member, for the remaining 26 month vacant term.

FOR THE OFFICE OF Iowa City Council Member District B there were eight thousand five hundred seventy-one (8,571) votes cast as follows: Larry Baker received three thousand seven hundred thirty-five (3,735) votes, Connie Champion received four thousand seven hundred forty-nine (4,749) votes and Scattering received eighty-seven (87) votes.

We therefore declare Connie Champion duly elected to the office of Council Member District B, for the term of 4 years.

FOR THE OFFICE OF Iowa City Council Member At Large (TWO to be elected) there were sixteen thousand three hundred ten (16,310) votes cast as follows: Ernest W. Lehman received five thousand thirty-seven (5,037) votes, Derek Maurer received three thousand seven hundred twenty (3,720) votes, Mike O' Donnell received three thousand nine hundred forty-two (3,942) votes, Ross Wilburn received three thousand five hundred twenty-four (3,524) votes and Scattering received eighty-seven (87) votes.

We therefore declare Ernest W. Lehman and Mike O' Donnell duly elected to the offices of Council Member At Large, for the term of 4 years.

Upon the public measure (A)

SUMMARY: Public measure to delay the First Avenue Extension.

Vote Yes to delay, No for no delay.

there were eight thousand nine hundred forty-five (8,945) votes cast, as follows:

FOR the question there were four thousand nine hundred eighty-five (4,985) votes cast.

AGAINST the question there were three thousand nine hundred sixty (3,960) votes cast.

We therefore declare the public measure (A)

FOR THE OFFICE OF Lone Tree City Mayor there were two hundred sixty-seven (267) votes cast as follows: Bill Crawford received one hundred thirty-nine (139) votes, Robert R. Wisor received one hundred twenty-eight (128) votes, and there were no Scattered votes.

We therefore declare Bill Crawford duly elected to the office of Mayor, for the term of 2 years.

FOR THE OFFICE OF Lone Tree City Council Member (THREE to be elected) there were seven hundred sixty (760) votes cast as follows: Michael Arnold received two hundred twenty-three (223) votes, Jeff Lihs received one hundred fifteen (115) votes, Ray Meyer received thirty-four (34) votes, Stephen W. Ratzlaff received two hundred six (206) votes, Ralph A. Slaughter received sixty (60) votes, David Smith received one hundred fourteen (114) votes and Scattering received eight (8) votes.

We therefore declare Michael Arnold, Jeff Lihs and Stephen W. Ratzlaff duly elected to the offices of Council Member, for the term of 4 years.

FOR THE OFFICE OF North Liberty City Mayor there were five hundred fifty-two (552) votes cast as follows: Charles W. Hippee received three hundred sixty-six (366) votes, Dennis G. Pelland received fifty-four (54) votes, David J. Roberts received one hundred twenty-nine (129) votes and Scattering received three (3) votes.

We therefore declare Charles W. Hippee duly elected to the office of Mayor, for the term of 4 years.

FOR THE OFFICE OF North Liberty City Council Member (TWO to be elected) there were one thousand forty-four (1,044) votes cast as follows: Angela Boeke received two hundred four (204) votes, Rob Brandt received one hundred ninety-nine (199) votes, Larry J. Lee received one hundred thirty-one (131) votes, Tom Ries received two hundred forty-three (243) votes, John James Soukup received two hundred sixty-two (262) votes, and Scattering received five (5) votes.

We therefore declare Tom Ries and John James Soukup duly elected to the offices of Council Member, for the term of 4 years.

FOR THE OFFICE OF Oxford City Mayor there were forty-four (44) votes cast as follows: Donald H. Saxton received forty (40) votes and Scattering received four (4) votes.

We therefore declare Donald H. Saxton duly elected to the office of Mayor, for the term of 2 years.

FOR THE OFFICE OF Oxford City Council Member (TWO to be elected) there were eighty-nine (89) votes cast as follows: Mary Sue Jiras received forty-six (46) votes, Nancy A. Skripsky received thirty-nine (39) votes and Scattering received four (4) votes.

We therefore declare Mary Sue Jiras and Nancy A. Skripsky duly elected to the offices of Council Member, for the term of 4 years.

FOR THE OFFICE OF Shueyville City Mayor there were twenty-three (23) votes cast as follows: Joseph L. Zalesky received twenty-two (22) votes and Scattering received one (1) vote.

We therefore declare Joseph L. Zalesky duly elected to the office of Mayor, for the term of 2 years.

FOR THE OFFICE OF Shueyville City Council Member (FIVE to be elected) there were one hundred eighteen (118) votes cast as follows: Thomas L. Carver received twenty-four (24) votes, Patrick M. Murphy received twenty-two (22) votes, Peter A. Phillips received twenty-two (22) votes, Dorance Sheely received twenty-five (25) votes, Roman Volesky received twenty-three (23) votes and Scattering received two (2) votes.

We therefore declare Thomas L. Carver, Patrick M. Murphy, Peter A. Phillips, Dorance Sheely and Roman Volesky duly elected to the offices of Council Member, for the term of 2 years.

FOR THE OFFICE OF Solon City Council Member (THREE to be elected) there were five hundred forty-nine (549) votes cast as follows: Jim Croy received seventy-one (71) votes, Rick Jedlicka received one hundred fifty-seven (157) votes, Mark A. Krall received one hundred fifty-three (153) votes, Scott J. Shulista received one hundred sixty-seven (167) votes and Scattering received one (1) vote.

We therefore declare Rick Jedlicka, Mark A. Krall and Scott J. Shulista duly elected to the offices of Council Member, for the term of 4 years.

FOR THE OFFICE OF Swisher City Mayor there were eighty-seven (87) votes cast as follows: Michael J. Cash received eighty-six (86) votes and Scattering received one (1) vote.

We therefore declare Michael J. Cash duly elected to the office of Mayor, for the term of 2 years.

FOR THE OFFICE OF Swisher City Council Member (FIVE to be elected) there were three hundred eighty-five (385) votes cast as follows: Scott Grabe received forty-nine (49) votes, Mark R. Meier, Sr. received twenty-two (22) votes, Jeff Quigle received fifteen (15) votes, Tina Richmond received seventy-three (73) votes, Kathy Riggle received sixty-eight (68) votes, Wayne Schwab received twenty (20) votes, Douglas Slauson received sixty-five (65) votes, Jerry Wood received fifty-nine (59) votes and Scattering received fourteen (14) votes.

We therefore declare Scott Grabe, Tina Richmond, Kathy Riggle, Douglas Slauson and Jerry Wood duly elected to the offices of Council Member, for the term of 2 years.

 

FOR THE OFFICE OF Swisher Park Commissioner there were fifteen (15) votes cast as follows: Eldred (Hank) Dubishar received four (4) votes, Terry Chalupsky received two (2) votes and Scattering received nine (9) votes.

We therefore declare Eldred (Hank) Dubishar duly elected to the office of Park Commissioner, for the term of 6 years.

FOR THE OFFICE OF Tiffin City Mayor there were forty-four (44) votes cast as follows: Glenn R. Potter received forty-three (43) votes and Scattering received one (1) vote.

We therefore declare Glenn R. Potter duly elected to the office of Mayor, for the term of 2 years.

FOR THE OFFICE OF Tiffin City Council Member - Four Year Term (THREE to be elected) there were one hundred twenty-nine (129) votes cast as follows: James R. Bartels received forty-seven (47) votes, Rodney Walls received forty-six (46) votes, Mike Ryan received twenty-nine (29) votes and Scattering received seven (7) votes.

We therefore declare James R. Bartels, Rodney Walls and Mike Ryan duly elected to the offices of Council Member, for the term of 4 years.

FOR THE OFFICE OF University Heights City Mayor there were sixty-nine (69) votes cast as follows: Donald S. Swanson received sixty-eight (68) votes and Scattering received one (1) vote.

We therefore declare Donald S. Swanson duly elected to the office of Mayor, for the term of 2 years.

FOR THE OFFICE OF University Heights City Council Member (FIVE to be elected) there were three hundred seventeen (317) votes cast as follows: Louise A. From received sixty-four (64) votes, Gloria N. Jacobson received sixty (60) votes, Martin L. Jones received sixty-two (62) votes, Richard Martin received fifty-four (54) votes, Donald B. Yarbrough received sixty-four (64) votes, and Scattering received thirteen (13) votes.

We therefore declare Louise A. From, Gloria N. Jacobson, Martin L. Jones, Richard Martin and Donald B. Yarbrough duly elected to the offices of Council Member, for the term of 2 years.

Motion by Jordahl, second by Duffy, to approve the results of the city elections of November 4, 1997. Roll call: aye: Bolkcom, Stutsman, Lacina, Duffy; absent: Lacina.
