REPORT (DUFFY): visited new road

Bolkcom: Charlie do you have anything to report on today?

Duffy: Steve and I have been checking some county roads in the last few days. The road that's straight north of Lone Tree, it's about 3 miles. They've done a beautiful job I think. The contractor, I think it might have been Peterson that has done work for us before. I will say anybody listening to this or on tape there will be a seal coat put on that road sometime in June. But they waited quite awhile for that road down there. The shoulders are wider. The farmers, there's a lot of hitters down there, maybe 20 feet wide and they've done a real good job on the road. So I hope that alleviates some of that to the left and the right of that road, there's dirt roads. That will tie up that part of the County but they've done a real good job.

Bolkcom: Good. Steve?

REPORT (LACINA): THANKS TO STAFF; AND WELCOME SUPERVISOR ELECT MIKE LEHMAN

Lacina: Just as my last Zoning Meeting I want to thank staff, Casie from the Auditor's Office, and Deana in our office and Pat and everyone for the support they've had over the last 8 years. Welcome Mike to the Board. Mike it's going to be a very rewarding experience and it's a great County to be in. Thank you all.

REPORT (JORDAHL): ATTENDED FIRE IN THE SKY IN DES MOINES

Bolkcom: Good. Yes I would share that. Jonathan?

Jordahl: Well I just might mention we've talked in our Comprehensive Plan a little bit about the idea of what the quality of life is in rural areas. Last Friday I had the privilege of visiting Des Moines on the occasion of their first what did they call it? Fire in the Sky. Well you know Des Moines' downtown has been accused of being a little bit slow at night. They had, you wouldn't believe the thousands of people that were downtown for this. They had Santa Claus there lip synching to Elvis and it was a fireworks display like I've never seen. A real sense of civic community down there. People out roasting chestnuts in the streets. Kids roasting marshmallows and carolers and it was really a different Des Moines. So I think they're trying to round that in an interesting direction.

Bolkcom: Good great. Sally?

REPORT (STUTSMAN): ATTENDED RVAP OPEN HOUSE; AND ATTENDED UNITED WAY BUDGET HEARINGS

Stutsman: About the only thing I would like to report on is I went to the RVAP open house last night. They have a new office space at 320 South Linn. It's a great space and so I think it was a good opportunity. Plus I also went to the United Way Budget Hearings last night and they presented their budget and they're doing good work. I appreciate all of the work all of these agencies do for the community making it the great place we have to live. That's all.

REPORT (BOLKCOM): VISITED WEST OVERLOOK ROAD; ATTENDED RVAP OPEN HOUSE; AND UPCOMING PARTNERS IN POLICY MAKING COMMISSION MEETING

Bolkcom: I had an opportunity to visit West Overlook Road which is a project that we've just completed over the weekend. It looks great. This extra nice weather we've had this fall has been very helpful to finishing up some of the projects we had open. I did talk to Mike Gardner today as well about his plans for any signage or striping of that. There is a stripe now but whether they'll do diamonds or maybe some sign on each end of that letting people know that you might come across somebody on a bike or somebody walking on that. But that project turned out quite well. Also made it to the RVAP open house yesterday. Very nice offices they've taken up there. Tomorrow I get to be on a panel in Des Moines with the Partners in Policy Making, which is a group of folks in the disability community that are trying to get people more involved in advocacy for the issues they're working on so I'm going to be doing that tomorrow and that's it.

INQUIRY (LACINA): WHEN ARE LEGISLATURE COMMITTEE APPOINTMENTS BEING MADE?

Lacina: Quick question Joe.

Bolkcom: Yes. Go ahead.

Lacina: When will the appointments be made so that you'll know what committees you're going to serve on in the Senate.

Bolkcom: Actually they're in the process of being made now and I talked to the Democratic Senate Leader today and he indicated several that I, probably in the next few days. I have some sense of a few. I'll be on Local Government and Natural Resources, Ways and Means, Commerce, and I believe you serve on one appropriations committee and I think I'm going to be like on Health and Human Rights.

Lacina: Congratulations. Heavy committees.

Bolkcom: Yes thanks.

Jordahl: Sounds good.

Bolkcom: Busy, busy. So why don't we take a short break. Let people take a look at our web page which will give you the address. A lot of interesting things there including that Comprehensive Land Use Plan.

REPORT (STUTSMAN): upcoming RIVER JUNCTION open HOUSE

Stutsman: Do we want to share that?

Bolkcom: Yes that would be a good one. You probably can't see it but maybe you could just announce it.

Lacina: Andy could probably zero in on it if you put it up close.

Bolkcom: If you put it on the wall over there he could probably get it.

Stutsman: Oh yes. This talks about the open house at River Junction this weekend. They're going to have lots of activities down there both Saturday and Sunday. So if people are looking for things to do that would be a fine place to go.

Lacina: Do you suppose Santa will be down there again?

Stutsman: Probably.

Lacina: He's everywhere.

Jordahl: Steady hands Joe.

Bolkcom: It's not bad.

Jordahl: No kidding.

REPORT (LACINA): upcoming RECORDER's office OPEN HOUSE

Lacina: Did somebody want to announce the Recorder's Open house which is going to take place, Deana when is that?

Stutsman: Oh.

Lacina: There will be cookies and punch.

Bolkcom: Next Wednesday the 16th from 2 to 4.

Jordahl: Here's another one.

Bolkcom: What a color.

Lacina: Thank you.

REPORT (STUTSMAN): RECEPTION FOR OUTGOING ELECTED OFFICIALS

Stutsman: Well and we should also announce that we're having a reception for retiring elected officials.

Lacina: No lets ignore that.

Stutsman: That would be Steve and Joe and Deb Conger in the Recorder's Office and Cletus Redlinger in the Treasurer's Office. That's going to be the 29th from 3 to 4:30 here in the Board room.

Bolkcom: It's a close up. Hang on. OK. Thank you Andy. All right. We've got all of our announcements in maybe.

Stutsman: Gosh we have a busy schedule.

Bolkcom: We do. It's OK. We'll take about a 10 minute break.

Recessed at 5:48 p.m.; reconvened at 7:55 p.m.

REPORT (STUTSMAN): rescheduling of job evaluation

Bolkcom: Reports and inquiries from the County Attorney?

County Attorney Pat White: No business.

Bolkcom: You were kind of quiet on that last one Pat.

White: Yes it's just as well.

Bolkcom: Pardon?

White: It's just as well that I was quiet. I'll be happy to tell you what I think if you want.

Bolkcom: Well you've got another week.

Stutsman: Gather your thoughts.

Bolkcom: Inquiries and reports from the public?

Lacina: Lets keep moving.

Bolkcom: And we did reports.

Lacina: We did reports.

Stutsman: Oh no. I have a report. I just wanted to remind the Board there's a change in the schedule on Monday for evaluations. Carol is on vacation. I don't think it's appropriate to ask her to come in to do staff evaluations. So we'll still have the work session but we won't do her evaluation. Is that OK?

Bolkcom: Very good.

Stutsman: All right.

Bolkcom: All right. Anything else? Move to adjourn.
