November 5, 2002 General Election
Guide to Election Night Returns

On Tuesday, November 5, this site will report turnout statistics throughout the day.  Following the close of the polls at 9 p.m., we will post election returns as soon as they are reported to our office.

Links to returns and turnout will be placed directly on our home page www.jcauditor.com.

Returns will show results from Johnson County only.  We will not have access to results from other counties.

Turnout Updates

Precincts report turnout at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., and 3 p.m.  Precinct by precinct turnout will be posted after each of these reporting times, once all precincts have reported.

Returns on web site

We will post a summary with totals for all races, contested and uncontested, including judicial retention.

We will also post precinct by precinct results for the following contested races as soon as precincts begin to phone in results:

  • US Senate and US Representative
  • Governor
  • Iowa Senate: Contested races in Districts 15, 40, and 45
  • Iowa House: Contested races in Districts 30, 79 and 89
  • Board of Supervisors

As time permits we will provide precinct results for the following statewide contested races:

  • Treasurer of State
  • Secretary of State
  • Secretary of Agriculture
  • Attorney General
  • Auditor of State

Returns on cable TV

Returns will be broadcast on Iowa City cable TV.  Channel and time details will be announced as Election Day approaches.  We will broadcast a rotating series of grand totals in contested races, along with a periodic update of which precincts have reported results.

View results at our office

Results will be displayed at the County Administration Building beginning at 9 p.m.  Visitors will see the same display as cable viewers.

When will results be available?

Early voting results will be posted promptly at 9 p.m.  After 9 p.m. we will enter and update returns as quickly as they are phoned in from the 57 polling places.  Once all precincts have called in, results will be labeled "Preliminary Final Results."

Number of Precincts

The total number of precincts for Johnson County in general elections is 58.  There are 57 polling places, and early ballots are counted as a separate precinct.  This is a change from past county-wide elections, as six new precincts have been added this year.  There are 58 precincts for all contests except state legislative races.

Number of precincts in legislative contests:

  • House District 29: 14 precincts (12 complete precincts, one annexed precinct, absentee)
  • House District 30: 13 precincts (12 precincts plus absentee)
  • Senate District 15: 25 precincts (24 precincts plus absentee)

  • House District 77: 13 precincts (12 precincts plus absentee)
  • House District 78: 13 precincts (12 precincts plus absentee)
  • Senate District 39: 25 precincts (24 precincts plus absentee)

  • House District 79 and Senate District 40: 4 precincts (two complete precincts, one annexed precinct, absentee)
  • House District 89 and Senate District 45: 8 precincts (seven precincts plus absentee)

When are the results final?

Once the poll workers have returned their supplies to our office, our staff will review the printouts from the voting machines and make any corrections.  Once all corrections are made, results will include the heading "Verified Preliminary Final Results."  These will be the last returns posted on November 5th.

Vote totals usually change slightly in the days following the election as special ballots and late arriving absentee ballots with timely postmarks are counted.

All election results are unofficial until the canvass of votes, conducted by the Johnson County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, November 12th.  Following the canvass, results will include the heading "Final Official Results."  These results will remain on our site permanently as a historic record.  Past Election Returns
