November 4, 2008 Presidential Election
Guide to Election Night Returns
On Tuesday, November 4, this site will report turnout statistics throughout the
day. Following the close of the polls at 9 p.m., we will post election
returns as soon as they are reported to our office.
Links to returns and turnout will be placed directly on our home page www.jcauditor.com.
Returns will show results from Johnson County only. We will not
have access to results from other counties.
Turnout Updates
Precincts report turnout at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Precinct by
precinct turnout will be posted after each of these reporting times.
Returns on web site
We will post a summary with totals for all races
except township offices, contested and uncontested, including judicial retention.
Township results will be posted once write-in winners are determined.
We will also post precinct by precinct results for the following contested
races as soon as precincts begin to modem in results (links to sample returns
with zero results):

Returns on cable TV
Returns will be broadcast on Iowa City cable TV channel 5. We will broadcast
a rotating series of grand totals in contested races, along with a periodic
update of which precincts have reported results.
View results at our office
Results will be displayed at the County Administration Building beginning
at 9 p.m. Visitors will see the same display as cable viewers.
Faxed Results
We will be faxing grand totals to our regular list of
news media contacts. Please contact our office with any changes or
corrections to fax numbers.
When will results be available?
Results will be posted beginning at 9 p.m. Early voting results will
be posted as soon as they are completed. After 9 p.m.
we will enter and update results as quickly as they are modemed or phoned in from the 57
polling places. Once all precincts have called in, results will be
labeled "Preliminary Final Results."
Number of Precincts
The total number of precincts for Johnson County in general elections is 58.
There are 57 polling places, and early ballots are counted as a separate
precinct.
There are 58 precincts for all contests except state legislative
races and city special elections.
Number of precincts in legislative contests:
- House District 29: 15 precincts (12 complete
precincts, two annexed precincts,
absentee)
- House District 30: 13 precincts (12
precincts plus absentee)
- House District 77: 13 precincts (12
precincts plus absentee)
- House District 78: 13 precincts (12
precincts plus absentee)
- House District 79 and Senate District 40: 5 precincts
(two complete precincts, two annexed
precincts, absentee)
- House District 89: 8
precincts
(seven precincts plus absentee)
There are two Johnson County precincts in the West Branch special
election (Scott Township polling place and Johnson County absentee). Most of the city of West Branch

When are the results final?
Once the poll workers have returned their supplies to our office, our staff
will review the printouts and data media from the voting machines and make any
corrections. Once all corrections are made, results will include the
heading "Verified Preliminary Final Results." These will be
the last returns posted on November 4th.
Absentee totals will change slightly in the days following the election as
provisional ballots and late arriving absentee ballots with timely postmarks are
counted.
All election results are unofficial until the canvass of votes, conducted
by the Johnson County Board of Supervisors on Wednesday, November 12th.
Following the canvass, results will include the heading "Final Official
Results." These results will remain on our site permanently as a
historic record. Past Election Returns

precinct totals for uncontested legislative races.
