Guide to Election Night Returns

On Tuesday, May 5, this site will report turnout statistics throughout the day.  Following the close of the polls at 8 p.m., we will post election returns.

Links to returns and turnout will be placed directly on our home page www.jcauditor.com.

Turnout Updates

Precincts report turnout at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., and 3 p.m.  Precinct by precinct turnout will be posted at these times.

Ten precincts include both city and unincorporated voters:

  • Iowa City 12 (includes East Lucas South) and 22 (East Lucas North)
  • North Liberty 1 (Clear Creek North) and 2 (Penn West)
  • Fremont (Lone Tree)
  • Jefferson East (Shueyville)
  • Jefferson West (Swisher)
  • Liberty (Hills)
  • Oxford (city and township)
  • Scott (Johnson County portion of West Branch)

In these precincts, turnout reports at 9, 11, and 3 are for the entire precinct, city and unincorporated. Separate turnout figures for city and unincorporated voters will only be available for the 8 p.m. final total. Coty and unincorporated totals for these precincts will be reported separately.

Approval or Rejection

In this election the local option sales tax is approved or rejected separately by each of the 13 units of government: the 11 cities entirely in Johnson County, the Johnson County portion of West Branch, and unincorporated Johnson County. To pass, 50% is required.

Returns

We will post precinct by precinct results for all 13 contests.  Your browser may save pages for later viewing.  To be sure to get the latest results, reload the page.

When will results be available?

Early voting results will be posted promptly at 8 p.m.  After 8 p.m. we will enter and update returns as quickly as they are modemed or phoned in from the 57 polling places.  Once all precincts have called in, results will be labeled "Preliminary Final Results."

Results on Cable TV

Results will be available on Iowa City Cable TV channel 5.  We will broadcast grand totals for all 13 contests plus a list of precincts reporting.

Number of Precincts

There are 58 precincts in this election.  This includes 57 election day polling places, plus early voting which is counted as a separate precinct. Ten precincts include both city and unincorporated voters.

  • Iowa City: 26 precincts (25 polling places plus early vote)
  • Coralville: 7 precincts (6 polling places plus early vote)
  • North Liberty: 3 precincts (2 polling places plus early vote)
  • Hills, Lone Tree, Oxford, Shueyville, Swisher, Solon, Tiffin, University Heights, West Branch: 2 precincts (polling place plus early vote) Note that only the Johnson County portion of West Branch will be voting on May 5.
  • Unincorporated Johnson County: 26 precincts (25 polling places plus early vote). Precinct results will list 23 polling places plus absentee. Results for two unincorporated areas of one house each which vote at North Liberty polling places will be included with Clear Creek and Penn townships.

When are the results final?

Once the poll workers have returned their supplies to our office, our staff will review the printouts from the voting machines and make any corrections.  Once all corrections are made, results will include the heading "Verified Preliminary Final Results."  These will be the last returns posted on May 5th.

Vote totals may change in the days following the election as provisional ballots and late arriving absentee ballots with timely postmarks are counted.

All election results are unofficial until the official canvass of votes, conducted by the Johnson County Board of Supervisors.  Following the canvass, results will include the heading "Final Official Results."  These results will remain on our site permanently as a historic record.  Past election returns
