May 5, 2009 Local Option Sales Tax Election

Ballots Counted After Election Night, Absentee Ballots Not Returned and Provisional Ballots

Total of nine ballots counted after Election Night.

Mailed Ballots:

May 6 mail delivery: Three ballots returned. Two domestic, one overseas, all Iowa City.
May 7 mail delivery: Four ballots returned. Three overseas Iowa City; one domestic Coralville.  One of the Iowa City ballots was a re-issue of a ballot that had been rejected (no address on affidavit).

All ballots received by mail on May 6 and 7 were timely and were counted on May 7 by the provisional ballot board. These were the last ballots counted.

May 8 mail delivery: Three ballots returned: two domestic mail from city of Lone Tree, one overseas from Iowa City. All had late postmarks.

May 11 mail delivery:  Two ballots returned: one Coralville overseas ballot returned undeliverable, one Iowa City overseas returned unvoted. Noon May 11 was the deadline for ballots to be received before the May 12 canvass.

Provisional Ballots:

• Iowa City 25 (1): Voter with no mailed absentee ballot to surrender; counted.
• North Liberty 1 (1): Voter with no mailed absentee ballot to surrender; counted.
• Oxford (2): Voters in wrong precinct; not counted.
• Total: 4 cast, 2 counted.

Summary:

16 additional ballots processed after Election Day:  12 absentee ballots (7 counted, 5 not counted) and 4 provisional ballots (2 counted, 2 not counted).

7 absentee ballots counted:  6 Iowa City (5 received and postmarked timely, 1 replacement for ballot with deficient affidavit envelope) and 1 Coralville (received and postmarked timely).

5 absentee ballots not counted:  2 Iowa City (1 postmarked late, 1 returned unvoted), 2 Lone Tree (postmarked late), 1 Coralville (returned undeliverable).

2 provisional ballots counted:  1 Iowa City (had requested absentee ballot but not voted), 1 North Liberty (had requested absentee ballot but not voted).

2 provisional ballots not counted: 2 Oxford (voted in wrong precinct).

Ballots Not Returned by Noon May 11 Deadline
