Dates and deadlines:
- August 10 - 27: Candidate filing period for Iowa City and University
Heights.
- Friday, August 28: City clerks deliver nomination papers to Auditor's
Office.
- Tuesday, September 1: Withdrawal deadline, 5 p.m. with city clerk (not
our office)
- Friday, September 25: Traditional voter registration deadline, 5 p.m. 11
days before the election.
Voters may still register after this deadline but must use
the election
day registration procedure.
Register To Vote
- Friday, October 2: 5 p.m. deadline to request absentee ballot by mail.
- Monday, October 5: last day to vote early at auditor's office; postmark
deadline for mailed absentee ballots to be counted.
Number of candidates to require primary
- Iowa City, at large (two to be elected): Primary required if five or
more candidates file. Top four candidates advance to November 3 election.
- Iowa City, District B: Primary required if three or more candidates
file. Two candidates filed and a primary will not be required.
- University Heights, mayor: Primary required if three or more candidates
file.
- University Heights, council (five to be elected): Primary required if 11
or more candidates file.

Upon filing nomination papers, all candidates complete an affidavit of
candidacy form. This includes a space for the candidate's phone number
with the notation "Optional, will be published." If no phone
number is listed for a candidate on this web site, the candidate left the
phone number space blank on the affidavit of candidacy.
Note regarding candidate
e-mail addresses and web sites
The affidavit of candidacy form also includes a space for the candidate to
list an e-mail address. To e-mail a candidate, replace the italic AT
in the address with the @ sign. (The @
has been replaced with AT on this web
site to block address harvesting software used by spammers.)
If no e-mail address is listed for a candidate, the candidate left the
e-mail address space blank on the affidavit of candidacy.
