Political parties and non-party organizations could nominate candidates by convention. Delegates to these conventions were elected at the January 3, 2008 caucuses. Candidates nominated by petition needed 250 signatures.

Dates and deadlines:

  • December 3: Democratic Party nominating convention, 7 p.m., Pappajohn Business Building, University of Iowa campus.
  • December 5: Republican Party nominating convention, 1 p.m., Coralville Public Library.
  • December 24-25: County Christmas holidays.
  • December 28, 5 p.m.: Deadline for candidates to file. (Normally 25 days before election, postponed since deadline would have fallen on Christmas Day.)
  • January 1: New Year's Day county holiday.
  • January 8: Traditional voter registration deadline, 11 days before election, 5 p.m. Voters could still register after this date using the election day registration procedure.
  • January 15: Deadline to request early ballot by mail. Requests must be received in our office by 5 p.m.
  • January 16: County auditor's office open Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for early voting and other election business. Postmark deadline for mailed absentee ballots (moved up from Jan. 18 due to legal holiday).
  • January 18: Martin Luther King birthday holiday.
  • January 26: Official Canvass, 2 p.m., Health and Human Services Building, Room 203B&C
