TO: Appointment Committee
c/o Johnson County Auditor
913 South Dubuque St.
Iowa City, IA 52240
January 2, 1999
To the County Board of Supervisors Appointment Committee:
Later this month, you will be considering a replacement to fill the vacancy on the Johnson County Board of Supervisors. I am writing to express my support for Tom Carsner for this position.
Tom Carsner has studied and been involved in county issues since 1991 and was part of the team that developed the updated version of the county's land use plan. I met Tom through my involvement in the Iowa City Green Party; our members were impressed by his in-depth knowledge of land management and development issues, and his commitment to fair and sustainable land use, urban development and the preservation of sensitive areas and agricultural land. We were also impressed with Tom's commitment to maintaining county services. I know that our members supported him in his campaign for the Board of Supervisors last year, and some of us worked on his campaign.
I would ask you to consider the need for continuity and balance on the Board of Supervisors. The outgoing supervisor, Joe Bolkcom, has shown a strong commitment to sound environmental and social policies. I believe Tom Carsner's broad environmental experience, combined with his understanding of and commitment to social services and community work (such as his part-time position as chaplain at the VA hospital), make him the most qualified choice to follow in Joe Bolkcom's footsteps.
Sincerely,
Holly Hart
