Dear Selection Committee:
As a caseworker at the Department of Human Services, I worked closely with county services such as SEATS, Congregate Meals and the County Care Facility (now Chatham Oaks) and I was proud of living in a county with such a caring attitude towards all its citizens.
Later, as an administrator at DHS, I had the opportunity to manage the human services and MH/MR/DD budgets, which were a major part of the total county budget. Working with other department heads on budgets and union negotiations gave me a good perspective on the give-and-take of county management.
In my current position with the Sixth Judicial District, I have gained experience in the court system and insight into the problems of law enforcement. This position has also offered me the chance to do direct negotiation of contracts and I have developed skills in writing and managing contracts to get maximum performance for our money. I have also participated in the implementation of the Iowa Court information System. As an administrator, I feel my best skills are in personnel management and budgeting.
As you will see from my resume, I have extensive volunteer and community service experience, ranging from being a foster parent to serving on the Johnson County Extension Council, membership on the boards of non-profit human service agencies, eight years on the United Way Planning Committee and participation on the Governor's Select Committee on Court Improvement.
I have lived in the North Corridor area since 1978, and so have an interest in comprehensive planning for land use. As a homeowner and Iowa City apartment owner, I understand the viewpoint of property taxpayers.
I believe I would bring both leadership skills, vision and a spirit of cooperation to the Johnson County Board of Supervisors.
Sincerely,
Carol M Thompson
