Committee to Fill 2009 Vacancy on Board of
Supervisors
On October 30, 2009, a statutory committee of the Johnson County auditor, recorder
and treasurer appointed Janelle Rettig to the Johnson County Board of Supervisors
to fill the vacancy created by the death of Supervisor Larry Meyers. Following
the appointment, a petition was filed calling for a special
election, which was held on January 19, 2010.

officials are responsible for filling vacancies on the Board of Supervisors.

decided to appoint a supervisor to fill the vacancy, and sets application
deadline of 5 PM Friday, October 16. Committee tentatively schedules
appointment for a meeting at 10 AM Wednesday, October 28; this date is later
changed to accommodate an applicant's availability for an interview. Interested eligible electors who resided in Johnson County for 60 days
prior to appointment were eligible to apply.

interviews. Janelle Rettig appointed on a motion by Auditor Tom
Slockett, seconded by Recorder Kim Painter. The vote was two to one, with
Slockett and Painter supporting Rettig and Treasurer Tom Kriz supporting
Mike Lehman.
Supervisor Rettig was sworn in at 4 PM at the
Johnson County Courthouse, 417 S. Clinton St., Iowa City, in courtroom 3A.

after the appointment. Petition with 7,810 valid signatures filed requesting
special election, exceeding the requirement of 7,299 signatures (10

Meyers' term was scheduled to run through December 31, 2010, and special
election winner Rettig will serve through that date. Had Rettig lost the special
election or not been a candidate, the election winner would have taken office
immediately following the canvass of the special election, on January 26, 2010.
Had there been no election, the appointment would have run through the
canvass of the November 2, 2010 general election (on November 8 or 9, 2010).
Two supervisors will be elected to four year terms in the November 2, 2010
general election.
The annual salary of a Johnson County Supervisor, as determined by the
Johnson County Compensation Board, is $51,017.46.
