How the candidates were selected
The county fair mock election did not use the actual list of candidates from
the November ballot. The filing deadlines
were August 13 for presidential and congressional candidates and August 25 for county candidates. Because the mock election
was before the filing deadline, the Auditor’s Office had to choose which candidates to include. The candidates listed
were those considered most likely to qualify.
Differences between fair ballot and November ballot
- President: Brown did not qualify; Bill Van Auken (Nominated by
petition) did qualify.
On July 28, during the fair, James Harris
(GA) and Margaret Trowe (MA) filed as the Socialist
Workers Party presidential ticket in Iowa. Both members of the official
Socialist Workers Party ticket were ineligible to serve under the U.S.
Constitution
(Calero was not a native born citizen and Hawkins
was under 35 years
old), and Harris and Trowe ran as a stand-in ticket in some states.
- US Senate: Watson did not qualify.
- Board of Supervisors: Richard Benn (Republican) announced his
candidacy after the fair.
- US Representative, Sheriff: The same candidates listed at the
fair, and no others, qualified for the November ballot.
