The Auditor’s Office conducted a mock election as part of the Johnson
County Government booth in Exhibition Hall B at the Johnson County Fair July

U.S. Senate, U.S. Representative, and two ballot issues.
All persons attending the fair, including children and guests from outside
Johnson County, ere able to see and use real voting booths and machines to

Ballot Issues Iowa Constitutional
Amendment
(50% Yes Required)Section 5 of Article II
of the constitution of the State of Iowa is repealed and the following
adopted in lieu thereof:
Disqualified Persons. Sec. 5. A person adjudged
mentally incompetent to vote or a person convicted of any infamous crime
shall not be entitled to the privilege of an elector.
Explanation:
This amendment removes the words “idiot” and “insane” from the
constitutional provision and substitutes the phrase “mentally
incompetent to vote”. Conservation Bond
(60% Yes Required)
Shall the County of
Johnson, State of Iowa, be authorized to acquire and develop lands with
public access provided, to be managed by the Johnson County Conservation
Board, in order to protect the water quality in rivers, lakes and
streams; protect forests to improve air quality; protect natural areas
and wildlife habitat from development, and provide for parks and trails,
at a cost not exceeding $20,000,000 and issue its general obligation
bonds in an amount not exceeding $20,000,000 for that purpose, to be
repaid in not more than 20 years? All expenditures will be subject to an
annual independent audit.
Differences between mock election ballot and actual November ballot
Because the county fair was before the filing period for third party and
independent candidates, our office had to determine which candidates would
appear on the mock election ballot.
- Presidential candidates: The seven parties listed all qualified. James
Harris filed as the stand-in candidate in Iowa for the Socialist Workers
Party. Calero is ineligible for the presidency as he is not a native born
citizen.
Nader also qualified, but used the label "Peace and Freedom Party" rather
than "nominated by petition."
In addition, Gloria LaRiva of the Party for Socialism and Liberation
qualified for the ballot.
- U.S. Senate: Newberry did not qualify for the ballot and no other
candidates filed. The November ballot listed only Harkin and Reed.
- U.S. Representative: The three candidates listed qualified. In addition,
Wendy Barth (Green) announced her candidacy
after the fair and was on the ballot.
Vice presidential candidates were not listed on the mock election ballot,
as Obama and McCain had not yet chosen their running mates at the time of
the fair.
