22 NORTH LIBERTY – Special Ballot Board meets, 12:00 noon

26 NORTH LIBERTY – Last day to accept mailed ballots that were postmarked by February 19.

27 MT. VERNON SCHOOL – Election Day.

3 SCHOOL – First day to apply for absentee ballot, 70 days before the election [53.2].

4 Independence Day – County Holiday

9 SCHOOL - First day for candidates to file, 64 days before the election, File with school board secretary.  Each petition must have at least 1% of the registered voters in the district (as of May 1), or 100 signatures, whichever is less.

  • Iowa City: 100 signatures
  • Clear Creek Amana: 47 signatures
  • Lone Tree: 14 signatures
  • Solon: 38 signatures

AUGUST

2 SCHOOL - Last day for candidates to file (5:00 p.m.) 40 days before the election with the school board secretary. [277.4]

3 SCHOOL - Last day to receive notification of special election to be held on the same date as the regular election, 5:00 p.m. [47.6].  School board secretary delivers nomination petitions to Auditor's Office, 1 day after last filing date, 5:00 p.m. [277.4]

7 SCHOOL - Last day for candidates to withdraw by filing signed statement 35 days before the election, 5:00 p.m. [277.4]

13 CITY – IOWA CITY, UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, SHUEYVILLE – First day for candidates to file. 85 days before the election. File with City Clerk. Each petition must have signatures equal to 2% of the number of voters in the last regular city election, but not less than 10.  Amount to be verified by cities. [376.4]

2001 Requirements:

13 SCHOOL - Last day to submit a petition requesting a satellite absentee voting station, 5 p.m., a minimum of 100 signatures required, 30 days before the election, 29 days due to the deadline falling on a Sunday. [53.11(3)] [47.4]

27 CITY (OTHER THAN IC, UH, SH) – First day for candidates to file. 71 days before the election, file with City Clerk. Each petition must have signatures equal to 2% of the number of voters in the last regular city election, but not less than 10 [376.4, 44.4, 45.1(8a)]   Amount to be verified by cities.

2001 Requirements:

  • Coralville, North Liberty: 25
  • All others: 10

27 SCHOOL - Last valid postmark date for mailed registration forms received in the Auditor's Office after the Aug. 31 deadline. [48A.9(3)]

28 CITY – First day to apply for absentee ballot, 70 days before the election. [53.2]

30 CITY – IOWA CITY, UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, SHUEYVILLE – Last day for candidates to file, 68 days before the election to the city clerk, 5:00 p.m. [376.4] [44.4].

31 CITY – IOWA CITY, UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, SHUEYVILLE – City Clerk delivers nomination petitions to Auditor's Office, 1 day after last filing date, 5:00 p.m. [376.4]  Last day to receive notification of city request for special election to be held on the same date as the regular election, 5:00 p.m. [47.6]  (NOTE: See October 5)

31 CITY PRIMARY – First day to apply for absentee ballot (we cannot accept requests for absentee ballots until our office is officially notified that a primary is required)

31 SCHOOL – VOTER REGISTRATION DEADLINE 11 days before the election, Friday, 5:00 p.m. [48A.9(1)]

SEPTEMBER

3 Labor Day – County Holiday

4 CITY – IOWA CITY, UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, SHUEYVILLE - Last day for candidates who have filed nomination papers with the county auditor to withdraw, 64 days before the election. [44.9(2)] (63 days because deadline falls on a legal holiday) [47.4]

6 SCHOOL - School of instruction for precinct officials 7 p.m., County Administration Building. [49.124]

10  SCHOOL - Satellite Voting, Iowa City Public Library, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

11 SCHOOL ELECTION DAY

Hours: 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Iowa City, Clear Creek Amana, Lone Tree and Solon.  Vote at school polling places.
College, Lisbon, Mt. Vernon, Williamsburg: 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Highland, Mid-Prairie, West Branch and West Liberty: noon to 8 p.m. Contact control county for more information.

  • Absentee ballot requests are delivered to hospitals and care centers for voters admitted within three days of the election [53.22(2)]

  • Absentee board counts absentee ballots

  • Absentee ballots may be returned to Auditor's Office (not to a polling place) until the close of polls at 8:00 p.m.

12 SCHOOL - Special Precinct Board reconvenes to examine special ballots, noon on the day following the election [50.21]

14 SCHOOL - Canvass of votes, Friday after the regular school election. [277.20]

20 CITY – (OTHER THAN IC, UH, SH) – Last day for candidates to file, 47 days before the election to the city clerk, 5:00 p.m. [376.4] [44.4].  Last day to receive notification of special election to be held on the same date as the regular election.
