JANUARY

15 New precincts become effective.

21 Martin Luther King Day - County Holiday.

22 Campaign Finance Disclosure Filing Date - Filed or postmarked by this date. (city, school, local ballot issue, county) [56.6(1a)] [56.6(1d)] - Postponed from January 19 due to deadline falling on Saturday and legal holiday on Monday.


FEBRUARY

1 Deadline for incumbent state senators elected to four year terms in 2000 to declare changes of address.

11 Precinct Caucuses, 7:00 p.m.  Locations in all 57 new precincts set by political parties.

15 Deadline for incumbent state senators elected to four year terms in 2000 to resign final two years of term.  If more than one senator resides in a district and neither senator resigns the final two years of the term before this date, the seat will appear on the 2002 ballot.

18 President's Day - County Holiday

25 PRIMARY - First day for Democratic, Green and Republican partisan candidates for state and federal offices to file nomination petitions and affidavits of candidacy in the Office of the Secretary of State, 81 - 99 days before the election. [43.11(2)] [43.20(1a)] [43.20(1c)]

Democrats and Republicans require a minimum of 100 signatures; Green candidates require 65 signatures (100 signatures or 2% or party vote in last election, whichever is less [(43.20(1)"d"]).

9 NORTH LIBERTY SPECIAL - ELECTION DAY.

Bond issue for swimming pool and gymnasium.  Polls open 7 a.m. until 8 p.m.   First scheduled election using North Liberty's two new precincts.

18 PRIMARY - 5 p.m. deadline to submit a petition requesting a satellite absentee voting station, a minimum of 100 signatures required, 47 days before the election. [53.11(1)]

20 Democratic and Republican 2nd Congressional District Conventions.  Contact parties for more information.  Democrats: City High, Iowa City.  Republicans: Mt. Pleasant.

25 PRIMARY - First day to vote by absentee ballot in the Office of County Auditor, 40 days before the election. [53.11].  Overseas and armed forces absentee ballots must be ready to mail. [53.39]

26 Clear Creek Amana SPECIAL - VOTER REGISTRATION DEADLINE 11 days before the election, Friday, 5:00 p.m. [48A.9(1)]

20 Campaign Finance Disclosure Filing Date. (school, county, local ballot issues appearing on 2002 ballots) [56.6(1a)].   Postponed from May 19 due to deadline falling on Sunday.

20 PRIMARY - Last valid postmark date for mailed registration forms received in the Auditor's Office after May 25th deadline. [48A.9(3)]

25 PRIMARY - VOTER REGISTRATION DEADLINE. County auditor's office open Saturday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. for voter registration, early voting, and other election business. [48A.9(1)] [48A.9(2)]

JUNE

1 PRIMARY - County auditor's office open Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for early voting and other election business. [47.2(5)]

3 PRIMARY - Last day to request an absentee ballot or vote early.  Satellite voting must end by 5:00 p.m.  Early voting continues at the Auditor's Office until normal close of business, 6:00 p.m.  Absentee ballots returned by mail must be postmarked by this date.

June 4:  PRIMARY ELECTION DAY

Polls open 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. [43.7] [49.73]

Vote at regular polling places.  First county-wide election using new precincts and new legislative districts.

  • Absentee ballot requests are delivered to hospitals and care centers for voters admitted within three days of election. [53.22(2)]

  • Absentee board counts absentee ballots.
  • Absentee ballots may be returned to Auditor's Office (not to a polling place) until the close of polls at 9:00 p.m.

24 GENERAL - Last day for judges standing for retention to file declaration of candidacy in the Office of the Secretary of State, 104 days before the election. [46.20]

29 GENERAL - First day for nonparty organizations and candidates  nominated by petition to file nomination papers and affidavits of candidacy for state and federal offices in the Office of the Secretary of State, 81 - 99 days before the election. [44.4] [45.4]

1 SCHOOL - 5 p.m. deadline for candidates to file nomination petitions and affidavits of candidacy with the school board secretary, 40 days before the election. [277.4].  Last day to receive notification of special election to be held on the same date as the regular election, 5:00 p.m. [47.6]

2 SCHOOL - School board secretary delivers nomination petitions to Auditor's office, 1 day after last filing date, by 5:00 p.m. [277.4]

5 GENERAL - First day for nonparty organizations and candidates nominated by petition to file for county and township offices with the county auditor's office, 69 - 92 days before the election. [44.4] [45.4] [45.1(5)]

SIGNATURE REQUIREMENTS

Board of Supervisors, County Attorney, Recorder, Treasurer: Minimum of 250 signatures.

Ag. Ext. Council = Minimum of 25 signatures [176A.8(5)]

Soil & Water Conservation = Minimum of 25 signatures [161A.5(3)]

Township Trustee = Minimum of 10 signatures [45.1(10)]

Note: As of July 1, 2001, library trustees are appointed and no longer elected.

8 GENERAL - Last day for candidates for state and federal offices who were nominated at the primary election to withdraw in writing to the Secretary of State, 89 days before the election. [43.76(1)]

12 SCHOOL - 5 p.m. deadline to submit a petition requesting a satellite absentee voting station, a minimum of 100 signatures required, 30 days before the election, 29 days due to the deadline falling on a Sunday. [53.11(3)] [47.4]
