1 New Year’s Day Holiday

10 IOWA CITY SCHOOL BOND - Last day to petition for a satellite absentee voting station, 5:00 p.m., a minimum of 100 signatures required, 32 days before the election. [53.11(4)]

17 LISBON SCHOOL - VOTER REGISTRATION DEADLINE, 11 days before the election., 5:00 p.m.[48A.9(1)]  Register to vote
(Though our office is open weekdays until 6:00 p.m., the 5:00 p.m. deadline is set by state law. Registrations received after 5:00 on this date will not qualify for the January 28 election.)

27 IOWA CITY SCHOOL BOND - Last valid postmark date for alternate registration received after registration deadline, 1/31.

28 LISBON SCHOOL - ELECTION DAY.  Lisbon School elections are conducted by the Linn County Auditor's Office.  Johnson County voters in the northeast part of Cedar Township may vote.  For more information call (319) 892-5300.

1 SCHOOL - School board secretary delivers nomination petitions to County Commissioner, 1 day after last filing date, 5:00 p.m. [277.4]  Last day to receive notification of special election to be held on the same date as the regular election, 5:00 p.m. [47.6]

1 IOWA HOUSE 30 - Deadline for candidates to file with Secretary of State, 5 p.m.(43.78, 44,4,45.1(4), 45.3)

  • Candidates nominated by political party convention to fill ballot vacancies must file certificate of nomination.

  • Candidates nominated by petition must file petition with 50 signatures.

  • All candidates must file affidavit of candidacy.

5 SCHOOL - Last day to withdraw by filing signed statement 35 days before the election, 5:00 p.m. [277.4]

11 CITY – IOWA CITY, UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, SHUEYVILLE – First day for candidates to file. 85 days before the election. File with City Clerk. Each petition must have signatures equal to 2% of the number of voters in the last regular city election, but not less than 10.

11 SCHOOL - Last day to submit a petition requesting a satellite absentee voting station, 5 p.m., a minimum of 100 signatures required, 30 days before the election (29 days due to the deadline falling on a Sunday). [53.11(3)] [47.4]

15 IOWA HOUSE 30 - VOTER REGISTRATION DEADLINE - Last day to register to vote 11 days before the election, 5:00 p.m. (48A.9(1)
(Though our office is open weekdays until 6:00 p.m., the 5:00 p.m. deadline is set by state law. Registrations received after 5:00 on this date will not qualify for the August 26 election.)

25 SCHOOL - Last valid postmark date for alternate registration forms received in the Auditor's Office after the Aug. 29 deadline. [48A.9(3)]

25 CITY (OTHER THAN IC, UH, SH) - First day for candidates to file. 71 days before the election, file with City Clerk. Each petition must have required number of signatures based on population set out in [45.1(8A)].

29 CITY – IOWA CITY, UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, SHUEYVILLE –  City clerk delivers nomination petitions to County Commissioner, one day after last filing date, 5:00 p.m. [376.4]  Last day to receive notification of special election to be held on the same date as the regular election, 5:00 p.m. [47.6]  A city primary, if needed, would become official on this date.

SEPTEMBER

1 Labor Day - County Holiday

2 SCHOOL – Bipartisan teams may begin delivering absentee ballots to hospitals and health care facilities 0-10 days before the election. [53.22(1a)]

4 SCHOOL - School of instruction for precinct officials 7 p.m. [49.124]

8 Last day to request an absentee ballot. [53.2]

9 SCHOOL - ELECTION DAY

Held the second Tuesday in September. [277.1]  Vote at school polling places.

Hours (2003): 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Iowa City, Clear Creek Amana, Lone Tree and Solon.
Opening hours may vary from past years and between districts.  2003 hours for districts primarily located in other counties:
College, Lisbon, Mt. Vernon: 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Highland, Mid-Prairie, West Branch, West Liberty, and Williamsburg: noon to 8 p.m.

4 CITY ELECTION DAY Polls open 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. [49.73]  Vote at regular polling places.
