JANUARY

13 - COLLEGE COMMUNITY - VOTER REGISTRATION DEADLINE 11 days before the election, Friday, 5:00 p.m. [48A.9(1)]

16 Martin Luther King Day - County Holiday.

16 CAUCUS - Precinct Caucuses, Democratic and Republican Parties; locations in all 57 precincts set by political parties.

20 COLLEGE COMMUNITY -  Last day to request absentee ballot by mail, 5 p.m.  (Requests must be sent to Linn County Auditor)

FEBRUARY

1. Signatures equaling 1% of the total vote for the candidate's party (governor or president) in the last general election.  2nd District Requirements:

  • Democratic Party: 1,716 signatures
  • Republican Party: 1,360 signatures

2. Signatures equaling 2% of the total vote for the candidate's party in the last general election in at least half of the counties in the district.

Note: The Governor and Lieutenant Governor are elected as a team.  Candidates for Lieutenant Governor are named after the primary and do not appear on the primary ballot.

State Senate: All odd-numbered districts.
Johnson County: Districts 15, 39, 45.  Four year terms.  100 signatures required.

State Representative: All 100 seats statewide.
6 seats in Johnson County: Districts 29, 30, 77, 78, 79, 89.  50 signatures required.


MARCH

4 CAUCUS - Democratic county convention, Northwest Junior High, Coralville.

6 PRIMARY - First day for partisan candidates for county offices to file nomination petitions and affidavits of candidacy in the county auditor's office, 69 - 92 days before the election. For county offices, Democrats and Republicans require a minimum of 100 signatures [(43.20(1)"d"]).  In Johnson County, independent candidates or candidates representing non-party political organizations may file a declaration of intent to file candidacy.

22 PRIMARY - Last day for candidates who file in the Office of the Secretary of State to withdraw, 76 days before the election. [43.16] [43.23(1)]

24 PRIMARY - Last day to file written objections to nomination petitions filed with the Secretary of State. [43.24(1a)]

27 PRIMARY - Last day political parties may designate to the Secretary of State a substitute candidate for another who withdrew or died on or before March 22, 2006, 71 days before the election. [43.23(1)]

29 PRIMARY - Last day for the Secretary of State to certify candidates' names to the county auditors, 69 days before the election. [43.22]

20 PRIMARY - 5 p.m. deadline to submit a petition requesting a satellite absentee voting station, a minimum of 100 signatures required, 47 days before the election. [53.11(1)]

22 CAUCUS - Republican 2nd Congressional District caucus, Cedar Rapids.

MAY

22 PRIMARY - Last valid postmark date for mailed registration forms received in the Auditor's Office after May 27th deadline. [48A.9(3)]

5 PRIMARY - Last day to vote early in person.  Satellite voting must end by 5:00 p.m.  Early voting continues at the Auditor's Office until normal close of business, 6:00 p.m.  Absentee ballots returned by mail must be postmarked by this date.

June 6:  PRIMARY ELECTION DAY

Polls open 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. [43.7] [49.73]. Vote at regular polling places.

  • Absentee ballot requests are delivered to hospitals and care centers for voters admitted within three days of election. [53.22(2)]

  • Absentee board counts absentee ballots.
  • Absentee ballots may be returned to Auditor's Office (not to a polling place) until the close of polls at 9:00 p.m.

12 PRIMARY - Absentee ballots which were postmarked before election day (Monday, June 5 or earlier) and received by noon today are considered to be on time to be counted. [53.17(2)]

15 or 16 PRIMARY - Three days following the county canvass of votes is the deadline for recount requests to be filed in the office of the county auditor. [50.48(1) & 43.56]

JULY

3 PRIMARY - State canvass of votes must be complete. [43.63]

4 Independence Day - County Holiday.

  • US Representative: 300 signatures.

  • Statewide office: 1500 signatures, including signatures from at least 10 counties.

  • Iowa Senate: 100 signatures.

  • Iowa House: 50 signatures.


AUGUST

3 SCHOOL - 5 p.m. deadline for candidates to file nomination petitions and affidavits of candidacy with the school board secretary, 40 days before the election. [277.4].  Last day to receive notification of special election to be held on the same date as the regular election, 5:00 p.m. [47.6]

4 SCHOOL - School board secretary delivers nomination petitions to Auditor's office, 1 day after last filing date, by 5:00 p.m. [277.4]

7 GENERAL - First day for nonparty organizations and candidates nominated by petition, and candidates for nonpartisan offices on the general election ballot, to file for county and township offices with the county auditor's office, 69 - 92 days before the election. [44.4] [45.4] [45.1(5)]

Board of Supervisors (2 seats), County Attorney, Recorder, Treasurer: Minimum of 250 signatures.
4 year terms.

Soil & Water Conservation = Minimum of 25 signatures [161A.5(3)]  2 seats.   4 year terms.

Township Clerks & Trustees = Minimum of 10 signatures [45.1(10)]

8 SCHOOL - Last day to withdraw by filing signed statement 35 days before the election, 5:00 p.m. [277.4]

10 GENERAL - Last day for candidates for state and federal offices who were nominated at the primary election to withdraw in writing to the Secretary of State, 89 days before the election. [43.76(1)]

14 SCHOOL - 5 p.m. deadline to submit a petition requesting a satellite absentee voting station, a minimum of 100 signatures required, 30 days before the election, 29 days due to the deadline falling on a Sunday. [53.11(3)] [47.4]

28 SCHOOL - Last valid postmark date for mailed registration forms received in the Auditor's Office after August 30 deadline. [48A.9(3)].

30 GENERAL - 5 p.m. deadline to file for county offices in the Office of the County Auditor.

  • Candidates nominated by petition for countywide office must file petition with at least 250 signatures.

  • Candidates for nonpartisan countywide offices (Soil and Water, Ag Extension)  must file petition with at least 25 signatures.

  • Candidates for township office must file petition with at least 10 signatures.
