6 SCHOOL - First day for candidates to file, 64 days before the election, File with school board secretary, Each petition must have at least 1% of the registered voters as of May 1, 2009, with a maximum of 50 signatures required.

  • Iowa City, Clear Creek Amana: 50 signatures
  • Solon: 45 signatures
  • Lone Tree: 16 signatures

30 SCHOOL – Last day for candidates to file with the school board secretary, 5:00 p.m., 40 days before the election [277.4]

31 SCHOOL - School board secretaries deliver nomination petitions to County Commissioner, 1 day after last filing date, 5:00 p.m. [277.4]  Last day to receive notification of special election or ballot issues to be held on the same date as the regular election, 5:00 p.m. [47.6]


AUGUST

4 SCHOOL - Last day to withdraw by filing signed statement 35 days before the election, 5:00 p.m. [277.4]

10 CITY – IOWA CITY, UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – First day for candidates to file. 85 days before the election. File with City Clerk. Each petition must have signatures equal to 2% of the number of voters in the last regular city election, but not less than 10.

  • Iowa City, At Large: 242 signatures (based on 2007)
  • Iowa City, District B: 187 signatures (based on 2005)
  • University Heights: 10 signatures
24 CITY (OTHER THAN IC, UH) - First day for candidates to file. 71 days before the election, file with City Clerk. Each petition must have required number of signatures based on population set out in [45.1(8A)].
  • Coralville, North Liberty: 25 signatures
  • All Other Cities: 10 signatures

24 SCHOOL - Last valid postmark date for registration forms  ("worry-free postmark deadline") received in the Auditor's Office after the Aug. 28 deadline. [48A.9(3)]

27 CITY – IOWA CITY, UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Last day for candidates to file, 68 days before the election to the city clerk, 5:00 p.m. [376.4] [44.4]

28 CITY – IOWA CITY, UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS –  City clerk delivers nomination petitions to County Commissioner, one day after last filing date, 5:00 p.m. [376.4]  Last day to receive notification of special election to be held on the same date as the regular election, 5:00 p.m. [47.6]  A city primary, if needed, would become official on this date.

28 SCHOOL – VOTER REGISTRATION DEADLINE - Last day to register to vote without additional requirements of Election Day registration, 11 days before the election, 5:00 p.m. [48A.9(1)] Register to vote

8 SCHOOL - ELECTION DAY

Held the second Tuesday in September. [277.1]  Vote at school polling places. Polls open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. in Iowa City, Clear Creek Amana, Lone Tree and Solon school districts.
Districts primarily outside Johnson County:
College, Lisbon, Mt. Vernon, Highland, Mid-Prairie, West Liberty: Noon to 8 p.m.
West Branch, Williamsburg: 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

  • Absentee ballot requests are delivered to hospitals and care centers for voters admitted within three days of the election [53.22(2)]

  • Absentee board counts absentee ballots

  • Absentee ballots may be returned to Auditor's Office (not to a polling place) until the close of polls at 8:00 p.m.

9 SCHOOL - Special Precinct Board reconvenes to examine provisional ballots, noon on the day following the election. [50.21]

11 SCHOOL - Canvass of votes, Friday after the regular school election. [277.20]

17 CITY (OTHER THAN IC, UH) – Last day for candidates to file, 47 days before the election to the city clerk, 5:00 p.m. [376.4] [44.4] 

18 CITY (OTHER THAN IC, UH) – City clerk delivers nomination petitions to County Commissioner, one day after last filing date, 5:00 p.m. {376.4}  Last day to receive notification of special election to be held on the same date as the regular election.
