2010 Election Calendar

For calendars from previous years, see election returns page.

2010-11 Elections and Events:

House File 2620, passed in 2008, changed school board terms to four years, with elections in September of odd-numbered years only. 2010 will be the first year with no school board election, though two districts will vote on ballot measures.

This calendar will be updated if additional special elections are scheduled during the year.


JANUARY

COUNTY SPECIAL - Last day to register to vote without additional requirements of Election Day registration, 11 days before the election, 5:00 p.m. [48A.9(1)] 
(Though our office is open weekdays until 6:00 p.m., the 5:00 p.m. deadline is set by state law.)

15 COUNTY SPECIAL - Last day to request absentee ballot by mail, 5 p.m.

18 Martin Luther King Day (observed) - County Holiday.

19 COUNTY SPECIAL - Election Day. Polls open 7:00 a.m. to 9 p.m.

23 CAUCUS - Precinct Caucuses, Democratic and Republican Parties, 1 p.m.; locations in all 57 precincts set by political parties.

26 COUNTY SPECIAL - Canvass, 2 p.m.


FEBRUARY

2 Mt. Vernon school district special election. Six Johnson County voters on the extreme northern edge of Cedar Township are registered in this district. For more information contact the Linn County Auditor, (319) 892-5300.

15 President's Day - County Holiday


MARCH

1 PRIMARY - First day for Democratic and Republican partisan candidates for state and federal offices to file nomination petitions and affidavits of candidacy in the Office of the Secretary of State, 81 - 99 days before the election. [43.11(2)] [43.20(1a)] [43.20(1c)]

U.S. Senate: 6 year term
(seat currently held by Sen. Grassley)

Signature requirements

1. Signatures equaling 1/2 of 1% of the total vote for the candidate's party in the last general election. 

  • Democratic Party: 4145 signatures
  • Republican Party: 3412 signatures

2. 1% of the total vote for the candidate's party in each of at least ten counties.

U.S. Representative: All seats (two year term)
(Johnson County: 2nd District)

Signature requirements

1. Signatures equaling 1% of the total vote for the candidate's party (governor or president) in the last general election. 

  • Democratic Party: 1910 signatures
  • Republican Party: 1224 signatures

2. Signatures equaling 2% of the total vote for the candidate's party in the last general election in at least half of the counties in the district.

Johnson County: Districts 15, 39, 45.  Four year terms.  100 signatures required.

State Representative: All 100 seats statewide.
6 seats in Johnson County: Districts 29, 30, 77, 78, 79, 89.  50 signatures required.

6 CAUCUS Republican county convention, Clear Creek Amana High, Tiffin.

8 PRIMARY - First day for partisan candidates for county offices to file nomination petitions and affidavits of candidacy in the county auditor's office, 69 - 92 days before the election. For county offices, Democrats and Republicans require a minimum of 100 signatures [(43.20(1)"d"]).  In Johnson County, independent candidates or candidates representing non-party political organizations may file a declaration of intent to file candidacy.

26 LISBON - VOTER REGISTRATION DEADLINE.  Last day to register to vote without additional requirements of Election Day registration, 11 days before the election, 5:00 p.m. [48A.9(1)].

29 PRIMARY - Last day political parties may designate to the Secretary of State a substitute candidate for another who withdrew or died on or before March 22, 2006, 71 days before the election. [43.23(1)]

31 PRIMARY - Last day for the Secretary of State to certify candidates' names to the county auditors, 69 days before the election. [43.22]

2 LISBON - Last day to request an absentee ballot by mail. Requests must be received in the Linn County Auditor's Office by 5 p.m.

5 PRIMARY - Last day to file written objections to nomination petitions filed with the county auditor. [43.24(1b)]

6 PRIMARY - Last day political parties may designate to the county auditor a substitute candidate for another who withdrew or died on or before March 26, 2010, 63 days before the election. [43.23(2)]

6 LISBON - Lisbon School District special election. Polls open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Johnson County voters in Cedar Township northeast of the Cedar River, including the unincorporated community of Sutliff, are eligible to vote. For more information contact the Linn County Auditor, (319) 892-5300.

22 PRIMARY - 5 p.m. deadline to submit a petition requesting a satellite absentee voting station, a minimum of 100 signatures required, 47 days before the election. [53.11(1)]

24 CAUCUS 2nd Congressional District Democratic and Republican conventions.

24 PRIMARY - The federal Military and Overseas Voter Empowerment (MOVE) Act of 2009 requires that military and overseas ballots be mailed by this date, 45 days before the election. [53.39; 53.8(1)]. Domestic absentee ballots should be mailed as soon as they are ready.

29 PRIMARY - First day absentee ballots may be voted in the Office of the County Auditor, 40 days before the election. [53.11]. 


MAY

4 Possible special election date for counties or cities [39.2(4)(a), 39.2(4)(b)]

24 PRIMARY - Last valid postmark date for mailed registration forms ("worry-free postmark deadline") received in the Auditor's Office after May 29th deadline. [48A.9(3)]

29 PRIMARY - VOTER REGISTRATION DEADLINE.  Last day to register to vote without additional requirements of Election Day registration, 10 days before the election, 5:00 p.m. [48A.9(1)]. County auditor's office open Saturday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. for voter registration, early voting, and other election business. [48A.9(1)] [48A.9(2)]

31 Memorial Day - County Holiday


JUNE

4 PRIMARY - Last day to request absentee ballot by mail.  Requests must be received in our office by 5 p.m.  (In person early voting available through Monday, 6 p.m.)

5 PRIMARY - County auditor's office open Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for early voting and other election business. [47.2(5)]

7 PRIMARY - Last day to vote early in person.  Early voting available at the Auditor's Office until normal close of business, 6:00 p.m.  Absentee ballots returned by mail must be postmarked by this date. Last day for voters to fix deficient affidavits, 5 p.m. [53.18(2)].

June 8:  PRIMARY ELECTION DAY

Polls open 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. [43.7] [49.73]. Vote at regular polling places.

  • Absentee ballot requests are delivered to hospitals and care centers for voters admitted within three days of election. [53.22(2)]

  • Absentee board counts absentee ballots.
  • Absentee ballots may be returned to Auditor's Office (not to a polling place) until the close of polls at 9:00 p.m.

10 PRIMARY - Special precinct board may convene no earlier than noon to begin to consider provisional ballots and absentee ballots that were postmarked on or before Monday, June 7. [50.21] [50.22] [50.24] [53.17(2)]

12 CAUCUS Democratic state convention.

14 PRIMARY - Absentee ballots which were postmarked before election day (Monday, June 7 or earlier) and received by noon today are considered to be on time to be counted. [53.17(2)]

14 or 15 PRIMARY - County canvass of votes convenes. [43.49]

17 or 18 PRIMARY - Three days following the county canvass of votes is the deadline for recount requests to be filed in the office of the county auditor. [50.48(1) & 43.56]

26 CAUCUS Republican state convention.


JULY

5 PRIMARY - State canvass of votes must be complete. [43.63]

5 Independence Day - County Holiday (observed).

21 GENERAL - Last day for judges standing for retention to file declaration of candidacy in the Office of the Secretary of State, 104 days before the election. [46.20]

26 GENERAL - First day for nonparty organizations and candidates nominated by petition to file nomination papers and affidavits of candidacy for state and federal offices in the Office of the Secretary of State, 81 - 99 days before the election. [44.4] [45.4]

SIGNATURE REQUIREMENTS

  • US Representative: 300 signatures.

  • US Senate, Statewide office: 1500 signatures, including signatures from at least 10 counties.

  • Iowa Senate: 100 signatures.

  • Iowa House: 50 signatures.


AUGUST

2 GENERAL - First day for nonparty organizations and candidates nominated by petition, and candidates for nonpartisan offices on the general election ballot, to file for county and township offices with the county auditor's office, 69 - 92 days before the election. [44.4] [45.4] [45.1(5)]

SIGNATURE REQUIREMENTS

Board of Supervisors (2 seats), County Attorney, Recorder, Treasurer: Minimum of 250 signatures.
4 year terms.

Ag. Ext. Council = Minimum of 25 signatures [176A.8(5)].  5 seats.  4 year terms.

Soil & Water Conservation = Minimum of 25 signatures [161A.5(3)]  2 seats.   4 year terms.

Township Clerks & Trustees = Affidavit of candidacy [45.1(10)]

All townships: Clerk, one trustee (4 year terms)
Some townships: additional trustee (2 year term to fill vacancy) 

3 Possible special election date for counties or cities [39.2(4)(a), 39.2(4)(b)]

5 GENERAL - Last day for candidates for state and federal offices who were nominated at the primary election to withdraw in writing to the Secretary of State, 89 days before the election. [43.76(1)]

13 GENERAL - 5 p.m. deadline to file for state and federal offices for the general election in the Office of the Secretary of State.

  • Candidates nominated by petition must file petition with sufficient number of signatures.  Signature requirements

  • Candidates nominated by political party convention to fill ballot vacancies must file certificate of nomination.

All candidates must file an affidavit of candidacy.   81 days before the election. [43.78(2)] [44.4]

20 GENERAL - Last day for candidates for county office who were nominated in the primary election to withdraw in writing to the county auditor, 74 days before the election. [43.76(2)].  Last day for nonparty candidates who have filed nomination papers in the Office of the Secretary of State to withdraw in writing to the Secretary of State, 74 days before the election. [44.9(1)]

25 GENERAL - 5 p.m. deadline to file for county offices in the Office of the County Auditor.

  • Candidates nominated by petition for countywide partisan office must file petition with at least 250 signatures.

  • Candidates for nonpartisan countywide offices (Soil and Water, Ag Extension)  must file petition with at least 25 signatures.

  • Candidates for township office must file affidavit of candidacy.

  • Candidates nominated by political party convention to fill ballot vacancies must file certificate of nomination.

SEPTEMBER

3 Mid-Prairie, West Branch School Special Election - Last day to register to vote without additional requirements of Election Day registration, 11 days before the election, 5:00 p.m. [48A.9(1)].

6 Labor Day - County Holiday.

14 Special election, Mid-Prairie and West Branch school districts. For more information, contact control counties.

16 GENERAL - 5 p.m. deadline to submit a petition requesting a satellite absentee voting station, a minimum of 100 signatures required, 47 days before the election. [53.11(1)]
