All Iowa voters will see the following question on this year's ballot:
Shall there be a Convention to revise the
Constitution, and propose amendment or amendments to same?
This question automatically appears on the statewide ballot every ten years,
as required by Amendment 22 to the Iowa State Constitution (adopted 1964).
If this question were approved, the state of Iowa would be
required to hold a state convention to revise or rewrite the state constitution.
Iowa voters would then have to ratify any changes.
Iowa has had three state constitutional conventions. Two
were prior to statehood (1844 and 1846). The most recent convention was in
1857, and produced Iowa's current state constitution. The 1857
constitution has been amended 47 times, most recently in 2008.
