Changes

Boundaries were adjusted in all precincts.  The most significant changes were:

  • Three precincts were created out of old Precincts 12 and 15.  New Precinct 6 was added at Mercer Park Recreation Center.
  • Three precincts were created out of old Precincts 2 and 9.  New Precinct 13 was added at the City Transit Building.
  • Most of old Precinct 13 was moved to Precinct 14 to vote at Twain Elementary. Much of old Precinct 14 was moved to Precinct 18 (Longfellow).
  • Old Precinct 6 at the Iowa Memorial Union was eliminated. All east side dorms (except Mayflower) will vote in Precinct 5 at Burge.

Council Districts

  • Council District A: Precincts 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 13, 14.  Population 20,377.
  • Council District B: Precincts 6, 12, 15, 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, 25. Population 21,038.
  • Council District C: Precincts 4, 5, 10, 11, 19, 20, 21, 22.  Population 20,805.

Precinct 10 was moved from District A to District C.

Approval Process

The first public hearing and vote on Iowa City's proposed precincts was held on July 31st, 2001.  The council approved the proposal on first consideration 6-0 (one absent).  On August 20 and 21, the council unanimously approved the precincts on second and third consideration.

Following approval of the new precincts, the Iowa Secretary of State recommended technical changes to the wording of the ordinance describing the combination of rural precincts East Lucas North and South with Iowa City precincts 22 and 12.  A second public hearing was held December 11, 2001.
