How To Vote Early

Voting Early By Mail

There's no extra expense to voting by mail - postage is pre-paid.

You can apply for a vote by mail ballot in writing from the Office of the County Auditor.  Iowa Absentee Ballot Request Form.

If you call the Auditor's Office at 356-6004, you can request a form and it will be mailed to you.

Separate requests should be made for each ballot needed. With the ballot you will receive a set of simple instructions.

Voting Early In Person

Early voting is available before all elections weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Johnson County Auditor's Office, 913 S. Dubuque St., Iowa City.  Ballots for the November 4 general election will be available September 25.

Our office also opens satellite early voting locations before most elections.  The schedule will be posted before each election.

Reasons To Vote Early

  • Choose the time to vote that is most convenient
  • Vote at home
  • It's environmentally friendly - save gas driving to and from the polls
  • Avoid long lines and parking problems at the polls
  • Take as much time as you need to mark your ballot
  • Set an example encouraging others who may not otherwise vote
  • Your busy schedule or unforeseen events won't keep you from voting
  • Bad weather on Election Day won't be a problem
  • Parents won't have to find a sitter for the kids
  • Avoid conflicts with your job or class schedule
  • Free time to help others get to the polls
