Changes in
Rural/Small City Precincts
Three new precincts were added in rural Johnson County, and
voters in East Lucas North and East Lucas South will go to different polling
places.
Big Grove (BG) and Solon (SO)
The old Big Grove precinct (rural Big Grove township and the
city of Solon) had a population of 3,848, more than the 3,500 maximum
allowed by law.
The city of Solon will now be its own precinct and continue
to vote at the Solon Fire Station. The other precinct will be the
rural part of Big Grove township and will vote at the Solon Public Library.
Clear Creek (CC) and Tiffin (TF)
In the past, rural Clear Creek township and the city of
Tiffin were combined into one precinct. Under the legislative
redistricting plan, Tiffin and rural Clear Creek are in different
legislative districts and can no longer be combined.
A new Clear Creek precinct, for rural voters only, has been
created with a polling place at Clear Creek Amana High School. Tiffin
city voters will continue to vote at the Tiffin Fire Station.
Clear Creek North (CN)
A small section of Clear Creek Township has been separated from the rest
of the township by North Liberty annexations and is in a different
legislative district than the rest of the township. Clear Creek North
will be combined with North Liberty Precinct 1. See
North Liberty map for details.
East Lucas North (EN)
In the past, East Lucas North was combined with Iowa City
Precinct 6 (Iowa Memorial Union). The IMU precinct has been
eliminated. East Lucas North will vote with Iowa City Precinct 22 (Shimek
School), the only adjacent precinct in the same legislative district.
East Lucas South (ES)
In the past, East Lucas South was combined with Pleasant
Valley township. Under the legislative
redistricting plan, East Lucas South and Pleasant Valley are in
different legislative districts and can no longer be combined as a
precinct. East Lucas South will now vote with Iowa City Precinct 12
(Grant Wood School).
Jefferson Township (JF), Shueyville (SH), and Swisher (SW)
The old Jefferson precinct (rural Jefferson township and the
cities of Shueyville and Swisher) had a population of 3,676, more than the
3,500 maximum allowed by law. Jefferson Township is now divided into
two precincts along Interstate 380.
The Jefferson East precinct includes the city of Shueyville
and all of rural Jefferson Township east of the highway, and will vote at
the Shueyville Community Center. (Note: a very small section of
Shueyville is west of the highway and is included with the rest of
Shueyville in Jefferson East.)
The Jefferson West precinct includes the city of Swisher and
all of rural Jefferson Township west of the highway, and will vote at
Swisher City Hall.
Penn West (PW)
A small section of Penn Township is completely surrounded by the city of
North Liberty and will be combined with North Liberty 2. See
North Liberty map for details.
West Branch (WB)
The Johnson County portion of the City of West Branch will continue to
vote with Scott Township.
Approval Process
On August 23, 2001, Auditor Tom Slockett presented
recommendations for precinct changes in rural Johnson County to the Board of
Supervisors. Minutes of Presentation
The Board held a public hearing on September 6, 2001 and unanimously approved
the ordinance on third and final consideration on September 27, 2001.
Following final approval, the Iowa Secretary of State
recommended technical changes to the ordinance. A second public hearing
was held on December 20, 2001.
Precinct Maps
Our office does not publish a rural precinct map since the county road map
($2.50) includes all rural precinct boundaries. In most cases, township
and precinct boundaries are identical, and cities within rural townships are
included in the township precinct. Exceptions:
- Jefferson Township: The dividing line between the Jefferson East and
Jefferson West precincts is Interstate 380. However, the small portion
of Shueyville west of the highway is included with the rest of Shueyville in
Jefferson East.
- Big Grove/Solon: The city of Solon and Big Grove Township are separate
precincts; the city limits are the precinct boundary.
- Clear Creek/Tiffin: The city of Tiffin and Clear Creek Township are
separate precincts; the city limits are the precinct boundary. A small
portion of Clear Creek Township is combined with North Liberty precinct 1
(see North Liberty for details).
- East Lucas South: Part of Iowa City precinct 12.
- East Lucas North: Part of Iowa City precinct 22.
