Straight Ticket Voting
In general elections only (November of even numbered years), voters have the
option of marking a straight ticket ballot. By marking only one place on
the ballot, the voter casts a vote for all candidates of the party.
|

|
A party does not need to have official party status in order
to have a straight ticket line.
If a party does not have a candidate for an office, the straight ticket
voter casts no vote in the contest (unless he or she casts an individual
vote in the race).
A voter may both mark the straight ticket option and vote for
individual candidates; in that case the votes for individual candidates
will be counted and will override any straight ticket choice. |
A voter casting only a straight ticket vote in the 2002 general election
would have recorded votes in the following contests

Note: effective with the 2006 general election, township
officials will be elected on a nonpartisan basis.
Non Partisan Offices and Ballot Issues
A straight ticket vote does not cast a vote in any non-partisan races
or ballot issues. These contests are on the back of the general election
ballot, and voters need to mark these contests individually if they wish to vote
on them.
Non-partisan offices on the ballot in general elections:
- Ag Extension council
- Soil and Water Conservation
- Judicial retention (yes or no for judges to remain in office)
- Township officials (beginning 2006)
Ballot issues in recent years have included:
- Iowa City library bond, jail bond, 1st Avenue extension, constitutional
convention (2000)
- Constitutional amendments, cable franchises (1998)
Vote for More Than One Candidate
In an election to fill more than one seat (such as the Johnson County Board
of Supervisors), any individual votes under the office override straight ticket
voting.
For example, in 2002 two supervisors were elected. There were three
candidates: two Democrats and a Green. A voter who marked the straight
ticket Democratic line and then marked a vote for only one of the Democratic
supervisor candidates would cast only one vote for supervisor.
Straight Ticket Voting in 2000 Presidential Election
In 2000, the following parties had a straight ticket line on the ballot:
- Democratic Party: candidates for all offices
- Republican, Green, Libertarian Parties: candidates for multiple offices
- Constitution, Reform, Socialist, Socialist Workers Parties: candidates for
President only
