Turnout Updates

Precincts will report turnout at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Turnout by precinct will be posted at these times. Link To Turnout Page

If you are comparing turnout to prior years, we recommend using 2013 or 2015, because city precinct lines were different in earlier elections. Additional historic information about city elections is available here.

We will post a summary of grand totals in all contests, and another page with results by precinct for all contests. To be sure to get the latest results on Election Night, reload the page.

We will not be providing a cable TV feed of results for this election. Please contact our office with any questions about this.

When will results be available?

We plan to post early voting results promptly at 8 p.m. After 8 p.m. we will update returns as quickly as they are delivered from the 18 polling places. (No, we're not saying an exact time.) Results will be reported by modem. Note that voters in line at 8 p.m. are allowed to vote, and results cannot be sent until the last voter is finished.

E-mailed Results

We will email precinct by precinct results to our regular list of news media contacts and to the addresses provided by candidates when filing. Please contact our office with any changes, additions or corrections to addresses. Format and layout will be the same as the returns page on the web site. If your news organization requires a hard copy fax, please contact our office.

Number of Precincts

Our results will list 46 precincts for this election. This includes 45 election day precincts. The 46th precinct is early voting, which is counted as a separate precinct.

For most cities in this election, there are two precincts: 1) the polling place and 2) absentee voting which is counted as a separate precinct.

Cities with more precincts:

  • Iowa City: 25 (24 precincts plus absentee)
Three of our voting locations will host two precincts, but each precinct will provide separate results.
Note that in Iowa City, both the at large contest and the District B contest are city-wide, and all Iowa City voters may participate.
  • Coralville: 8 (7 precincts plus absentee)
  • North Liberty: 7 (6 precincts plus absentee).
The whole city of North Liberty will vote at the Recreation Center vote center, but separate results will be provided for each precinct.

Write-In Results

Scattered write-in votes not determining the outcome of a contest will be reviewed in the days following the election. In the event a write-in candidate earns more than 5 percent of the vote, that person will be included in the final canvass of votes and listed on the web site.

When are the results final?

Once the poll workers have returned their supplies to our office, our staff will review the printouts from the voting machines and make any corrections. Once all corrections are made, results will include the heading "Final Election Night Results." These will be the last returns posted on November 7.

Vote totals may change in the days following the election if provisional ballots and late arriving absentee ballots with timely postmarks are counted.

All election results are unofficial until the canvass of votes, conducted by the Johnson County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, November 14. Following the canvass, results will include the heading "Official Canvassed Results." These results will remain on our site permanently as a historic record. Past election returns
