Janelle Rettig of Iowa City was appointed to the Board of Supervisors in October of 2009, won election in 2010, and reelection in 2010 and 2014.

Janelle grew up in rural Illinois, in the town of Dallas City, and graduated from Knox College, in Galesburg, IL, with degrees in Political Science and Education.  After college, she taught K-12 and coached softball and high school volleyball. Janelle was Chief Assistant to Illinois State Representative David Hultgren; worked on Congressman Jim Leach’s staff; and owned Alternatives, an environmentally-friendly retail store in Iowa City. A resident of Johnson County since 1989, Janelle and her spouse, Robin, have a very energetic Border Collie named CJ.

Janelle is a supporter of and volunteer to many organizations. She regularly volunteers at the Free Lunch Program, served as development director at the Iowa Bicycle Coalition, maintains a long involvement with the Iowa Women’s Music Festival, and was Founder/Chair of the Iowa Coalition for Human Rights.  Janelle was awarded the Rick Graf Human Rights Award in 2007 and the Stonewall Human Rights Award in 1997.

She is a member of a number of community organizations, including Bicyclists of Iowa City, Conservation Leaders Network, Environmental Advocates, Iowa Civil Liberties Union and the Johnson County Trails Foundation.

Janelle is proud of the progress and accomplishments she has been involved with since becoming a Supervisor, including establishing a County reserve policy; creating a Finance department; making a broader commitment to rebuilding and maintaining roads, paved shoulders and trails; hiring a sustainability coordinator; creating ordinances addressing stormwater management and wind energy facilities; and a commitment to quality of life through human services, mental health/disability services, block grants to local agencies, and economic development. She also points to significant recent projects, including passage of a Minimum Wage ordinance and development of a Community ID program.
