The sudden and unexpected death of someone we love can bring a range of emotions including guilt, shock, anger, sadness, resentment and regret, as well as a number of unanswered questions. Listed below is some information that may help you understand your own process of grief. Johnson County offers a number of services that are available to those who are grieving a loss. A list of these resources is described below. |

Described below are a number of resources available for you to turn to for grief support.
If you are having difficulty finding the right choice for you or having difficulty finding
services in your area, please contact the Johnson County Medical Examiner Grief Services
Department at (319) 339-6197 for assistance. Iowa City Hospice provides grief support services free of charge to ALL adults, children and teens in their seven county service area (Cedar, Iowa, Johnson, Linn, Louisa, Muscatine and Washington) who have experienced a significant loss. The person who died need not have been an Iowa City Hospice patient. Iowa City Hospice welcomes those who have experienced the sudden loss of a loved one to also participate in their bereavement services. Services include educational programs, support groups, social events, supportive visits and phone contacts by staff and volunteers, a library of books and video resources, referrals, grief counseling, bimonthly newsletters, and monthly mailings of articles about grief and loss. If you do not reside in the Iowa City Hospice Service area, they may be able to direct you to a hospice in your area that can provide support. The Crisis Center offers a variety of services to those in need. All services are free and confidential and most are available 24 hours a day, every day of the year. A counselor is available through their crisis line at all times for anyone who may need support and/or assistance by calling (319) 351-0140. Face-to-face counseling is also available from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. The Crisis Center also offers a Survivors of Suicide Support group. The Compassionate Friends (TCF) is a national nonprofit, self-help support organization that offers friendship, understanding and hope to bereaved parents, grandparents and siblings. TCF services include educational information and opportunities, nationwide support groups, monthly newsletters, national magazine, social events, resources for parents, grandparents and siblings, conferences, and volunteer opportunities. The mission of The Compassionate Friends is to assist families toward the positive resolution of grief following the death of a child of any age and to provide information to help others be supportive. First Candle is a nonprofit organization working to advance infant health and survival. First Candle’s primary focus areas include education and awareness, advocacy, research and family support. First Candle offers services for those who are dealing with the loss of an infant child due to stillbirth, SIDS or other unexpected infant death. Services include a 24 hour bilingual crisis line, grief resources, conferences and training, message boards and a number of memorial opportunities. GriefNet is an internet community of persons dealing with grief, death and major loss. The GriefNet site offers support groups, a grief library, bookstore, guide to resources and memorial opportunities. GriefNet offers support groups specifically for children, veterans, loss of spouse or partner, loss of child, loss of parent, loss of sibling or friend, losses related to health, unique losses, working with the bereaved, living with loss and supporting others. Survivors of Suicide (SOS) is an independently owned and operated website whose purpose is to help those who have lost a loved one to suicide resolve their grief and pain in their own personal way. SOS provides information not only for suicide survivors but for friends of survivors. SOS offers resources such as links to support groups, questions and answers about suicide and grief, poetry, a memorial wall, and a discussion board. For more information please visit http://www.survivorsofsuicide.com. Amanda the Panda provides support to grieving children and their families through a variety of services. Extensive support is provided to children, teens, and adults who are grieving the death of a family member through accident, illness, suicide, or homicide. This support is provided through weekend camps, support groups, home visits, fun days, school presentations, pen pal programs, Halloween and Christmas parties, birthday cards and remembrances on the anniversary of the death. Beyond Indigo is an online source of information on grief, grieving, death, and dying. It offers detailed support and information. This site provides opportunities to discuss various topics in chat rooms and message boards. Beyond Indigo offers information, polls, grief tools, advice columns and articles related to grief. Beyond Indigo also provides personalized grief support. Each day for a year a person can receive personalized grief support sent directly to his/her e-mail account. The Survivors Program addresses the immediate and long-term needs of persons who are survivors of homicide victims or whose lives have been impacted by violent crime. The program offers crisis intervention, individual counseling, criminal justice system advocacy, referral services, assistance in filing for compensation, community education and a long-term support system. Services are available 24 hours a day at no cost to clients and are confidential. Horizons partner with law enforcement, prosecutors and other professionals to create a seamless system of support for survivors of homicide and vehicular homicide victims. Support groups meet the 2nd Tuesday of the Month at St. Luke’s Hospital and the 4th Tuesday of the month at the North Liberty Community Center (March-October). Horizons is located in Cedar Rapids, IA at 809 5th St SE 52401 and serve approximately 23 counties in east-central Iowa. Iowa Hospice provides support to individuals and families before, during and after the death of a loved one. Iowa Hospice actively follows the bereaved for at least 13 months after a loss by mailing materials, phone calls and home visits. Services and support are available to all bereaved persons free of charge, even if their loved on was not cared for by Iowa Hospice. They also welcome concerned friends, neighbors, spouses and family members who have concerns about a loved one who is grieving.
