The Johnson County Cancer Coalition is comprised of professional staff and students from Johnson County Public Health, the American Cancer Society, the University of Iowa, and community agencies.
| BREAST CANCER FACTS AND STATISTICS |
• Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women.
| The American Cancer Society [ACS] estimates that 211,300 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to occur in women in the United States during 2003. |
• It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women.
| The ACS estimates that 40,200 deaths (39,800 women, 400 men) are anticipated from breast cancer in 2003. |
| COLORECTAL CANCER FACTS AND STATISTICS |
• Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer found in men and women in the United States.
| The ACS estimates that there will be approximately 105,500 new cases of colon cancer and 42,000 new cases of rectal cancer in 2003. |
• Colon cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths in both men and women combined.
| The ACS estimates that colorectal cancer will cause approximately 57,100 deaths in 2003. |
| LUNG CANCER FACTS AND STATISTICS |
• Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death for both men and women. More people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast and prostate cancers combined.
| The ACS estimates that 157,200 (88,400 men and 68,800 women) will die of this disease in 2003. |
• In 2003, the ACS estimates that approximately 171,900 (91,800 men and 80,100 women) new cases of lung cancer in the United States will be detected.
| PROSTATE CANCER FACTS AND STATISTICS |
• Prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer found in American men. Every 1 man out of 6 will get prostate cancer during his lifetime.
| The ACS estimates that there will be approximately 220,900 new cases diagnosed in 2003. |
• Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men.
| In 2003, the ACS estimates that approximately 28,900 men in the United States will die from this disease. |
| SKIN CANCER FACTS AND STATISTICS |
• Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer. It accounts for almost half of all cancers.
• Melanoma
|
Melanoma causes approximately 79% of skin cancer deaths. Approximately 7,600 people
will die of this disease in 2003. The ACS estimates that approximately 54,200 new cases will be detected in the United States in 2003. |
• Nonmelanoma
|
More than 1 million cases of basal cell and squamous cell cancer occur
every year. Men get these cancers about twice as often as women. There are approximately 2,200 deaths per year in the United States from this disease. |
