Disease Prevention Program

Germ Fighters, formerly called "Flu Fighters", is a disease prevention program aimed at reducing student absence due to illness in elementary schools. An intervention was implemented during the 2003-2004 flu season in two Johnson County elementary schools. The school that implemented the program experienced a 40% reduction in student absence due to illness compared to the school only monitoring illness.

Key aspects of the program include classroom education, hands-on germ experiments, homework activities, hand washing reminders, and the use of hand sanitizer in the classroom. All parts of this program are essential to preventing disease in a school setting. Most materials are appropriate for students grades Kindergarten-6th, but a few activities may be used with preschool-age children.

The materials used in the program are not copyrighted and are available for non-profit use. All materials may be downloaded below. For hard copies or other document formats please call (319) 356-6040, ext. 122.
