Hiking Protecting Yourself and Your Family From West Nile Virus
The best way to protect yourself and your family from West Nile Virus is to do the following:

bullet Avoid being outside at dawn and dusk. Mosquitoes are most active at those times.
bullet Wear long-sleeved, tight-knit clothing and long pants if possible.
bullet Use insect repellent containing DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide). DEET Guidelines Adobe Document
bullet Remove or exchange standing water in your yard several times a week.
bullet Fix/Install window and door screens to keep mosquitoes out of buildings.

Keep in mind that human illness from West Nile Virus is rare, even in areas where the virus has been reported. The chance that any one person is going to become ill from a mosquito bite is low.
