| About The Reserves | |
![]() Johnson County Sheriff’s Reserves The Johnson County Sheriff’s Reserve was established over 30+ years ago to assist the sheriff and sheriff’s department. Reserve deputies are called upon to provide a wide array of support labor for the Sheriff’s Office. Traffic control, security at the 4-H Fair, Solon Beef Days, Swisher Fun Days and other county events are just a few examples. Reserve deputies can donate their time to assist the jail staff and work patrol with a full-time deputy sheriff. After receiving the required training, reserves are allowed to carry weapons and then become qualified to work regular patrol shifts on their own, assisting the full time deputies. Reserve deputies go through a traditional application and interview process. Once the Sheriff appoints the applicant, that person begins a series of classroom and practical in the field training to become a certified Reserve Peace Officer in the State of Iowa. All reserve deputies are required to purchase their own uniforms and equipment. The time spent training, attending meetings, and working to support the Sheriff’s Office is volunteer time. There are currently 22 reserve deputies, all of whom maintain “day jobs”. Some of the reserves join the reserve program to gain law enforcement experience which is then used as a springboard to enter law enforcement full-time. Other reserves join to fulfill desires to be involved in law enforcement without having to change careers. |
