Mr. Jonathan Jordahl, Chair
Johnson County Board of Supervisors
913 South Dubuque Street, Suite 201
Iowa City, Iowa 52240-4207
Dear Mr. Jordahl:
As Chair of the Johnson County Jail Overcrowding Study Committee, I want to report to you on behalf of that committee that we held our first meeting on October 7, 1999.
Norman A. Osland was elected as Vice-Chair.
After significant discussion, the committee concluded that in order to assist the committee to determine its mission, I should suggest to the Board what we believe that mission to be and respectfully request you folks confirm our understanding to be correct.
We believe that our mission is to briefly identify the problem currently existing with respect to overcrowding of inmates at the current jail facility, investigate the alternatives to relieve the current problem of overcrowding and to deal with future projections of inmate populations, and then recommend, for the standpoint of the citizens of Johnson County, the best solution for the current and future inmate populations.
We have set a goal of completing our task within the next four months, and I will suggest to the committee that our findings of fact and recommendation be forwarded to you folks, in writing, when that task is complete.
I want to tell you that I am truly very impressed with the caliber of committee members. Please confirm that we have correctly identified our mission in this matter and feel free to get in touch with me or Norman if you have any questions or any further guidance you would like to provide.
Very truly yours,
C. Peter Hayek
