The City of Iowa City was recently presented with a Building Healthy Communities for Active Aging Commitment Award from the Aging Initiative of the US Environmental Protection Agency. The Johnson County Livable Community for Successful Aging Policy Board was mentioned as a critical partner to the City of Iowa City to “analyze the community’s needs for active aging.” The City is credited for “Respond(ing) with a variety of policies and programs to encourage physical activity among older adults.” Click on http://www.epa.gov/aging/bhc/awards/2008/index.html to link to a booklet describing all of Award Winners.

The Livable Community for Successful Aging Policy Board was created to support the vision of Johnson County a Livable Community for Successful Aging. The Policy Board grew out of a grassroots movement, the Johnson County Consortium for Successful Aging. Click HERE to link to more information about the Consortium and link to the reports. The Policy Board will provide fiscal oversight and program direction to support grants initially received from Johnson County, Heritage Area Agency on Aging, and the State of Iowa. The policy board serves in an advisory capacity to the Board of Supervisors.

There are a maximum of 14 members of the Policy Board. The Policy Board is appointed by the Johnson County Board of Supervisors and meets monthly. Members serve for three years, and membership consists of the following:
The Policy Board will provides financial oversight, monitoring, and program planning to support the vision of Johnson County a livable community for successful aging. The Policy Board will encourage and support the efforts of governmental units, businesses and private and non-profit organizations to help Johnson County, with its urban–rural mix, be a model livable community where persons can age successfully.

The Policy Board will lead efforts to implement the priorities of the Livable Community planning event sponsored by the Johnson County Consortium on Successful Aging and AARP Iowa in September, 2006. These include: 1) assuring that older persons and their families throughout the county have easy access to accurate information about county-wide services and activities; 2) motivating and engaging seniors about the benefits of physical activity and healthy lifestyles to affect behavioral change; and, 3) addressing barriers to obtaining accessible/universal designed housing.

The Policy Board will facilitate the exploration and implementation of the "future directions" contained in the September 2006 reports on: a) housing, b) transportation, c) health and supportive services, and d) successful aging that covered the areas of education and leisure, faith-based opportunities, employment and volunteerism.
