Near the end of the year in which a building permit is issued (or early in the next year), the property will be inspected by the Johnson County Assessor’s Office. A value for property tax purposes will then be placed on the property according to its stage of completion as of January 1.

The Assessor’s Office will make two (2) inspections in the case of a residential dwelling.

The first inspection will be made during construction and a second after the house is completed. Appointments are not usually made for these inspections, but owner cooperation is necessary. It is to the advantage of the homeowner to insure access for a thorough inspection. Notice of the assessed value as of January 1 will be mailed to the owner by April 15. First tax payments are due 12 to 18 months after valuation.
